THE MARKETS NEW YORK REFUSES TO FOLLOW LONDON Early Quotations in Markets Were Mixture of Gains and Losses By .'I ssociated Press New York, Jan. 6.—The only no table feature of to-day's stock market was its refusal to follow tho lead of London, where Americans were again lower, with losses ol" a point or more in several of the transcontinental is sues. Early quotations were a mix ture of gains and losses, most of the leaders showing little change either way. There were one point gains, however, in such specialties as Texas Company and Sloss Sheffield Steel. Trading was the lightest of any recent day, a tie-up of the local subway causing some confusion and delay In the financial district. NEW YORK STOCKS Furnished by H. M. Snavely , New York, Jan. 6. Nead said the selection has always been a matter of precedent and cus tom and he thinks it wise for the Poor Directors, in the absence of any law, "to follow custom and precedent." The Poor Board's requisition for $35,000 for the new year included ono new item. This is S9OO, set aside for the salary of the social worker, Miss Rachel Staples.
