MARKETS SINCE 1873
Trading in Days Preceding New
Year Reduced to Minimum
Proportions
By Associated Press
New York, Jan. 2.—The most nota
ble feature of the week in the stock
market was the fact that It brought to
a close the dullest year since 1878.
This condition was-directly due to the
European war. which necessitated a
suspension of market operations lot
over four months and caused nn enor- |
mous shrinkage in the value of Amer
ican securities.
Trading in the four business days
preceding the new year was reduced
to minimum proportions, with gome
tlrmness In leading stocks and a few
specialties. These, however, were de
cidedly under the price level attained
a little more than a fortnight ago
when open trading in the entire list
was resumed.
A few more stocks, most of them
unimportant, were added to the list
of issues which fell to minimum quo
tations, while U. S. Steel, Southern
Pacific and Baltimore and Ohio made
partial recovery from their low prices
of the preceding week. Acute weak
ness was shown by some of the Gould
stocks, Missouri Pacific falling
abruptly to a new low record. West
ern Maryland issues also were weak
as a result of the company's an
nouncement of its intention to default
on the interest of its outstanding
notes.
Wall Street looks with some hope
to the reopening of the London Ex
change next week and to the pro
nounced betterment in the Paris
banking situation. The outlook in the
steel industry is more e.ncouraglng
with some expansion in general trade.
The tlrst week of the new year Is ex
pected to witness the actual inaugu
ration of the $135,000,000 cotton pool,
applications for loans being already
under consideration.
Monetary conditions hold out much
promise in their greater ease, but
railroad returns offer little comfort,
some of the leading roads having suf
fered severely In the past month.

March thirteenth to twentieth has
been selected as dates for the sixth
annual automobile show to be given
under the auspices of the Harrisburg
Automobile Dealers Association. Th»
Arena will be used again and J: Clyde
M.vton will have charge of the show

Considering the practical comple
tion of the River Dam. motorboats will
110 doubt be more popular than ever,
therefore if sufficient Interest is shown
motorboats may be Included in the
display, as well as motorcycles and

other cities that have lakes or rivers
near for boating and should prove
popular here.
A Saxton roadster will most likely

any previous year.
London Says Allies Have
Made Little Progress
in Eastern War Theater
By Associated Press
London, Jan. 2, 12.53 P. M. —The
latest news available from the western
1 battle front shows that little progress
i is being made by the allied forces, and
rather indicatee a sporadic renewal of
the German offensive, with resultant
slight gains in the Argonne and French
Flanders. These operations can hard
ly be classed as a general German of
fensive movement in the west such
as is still being conducted in Poland,
1 but the strength which the Germans
;|are showing seems to muke it plain
, that they have not weakened appre
• ciably their western army by transfers
of troops to the east, nor has the
pressure of the allies broken their grip
on Belgium, France, from the North
Sea to Metz.
Small Overturn in
Year's First Trade
By Associated Press
New York. Jan. 2. Tile first day of
1915 on the Stock Exchange was mark
ed by the smallest overturn of any two
hour session In some years. Attendance
of brokers and customers was In keep
ing with the sluggish movement. Bead
ing shares showed no pronounced
change either way and some of the
! speculative favorites failed of a single
transaction. Among the specialties
were such variable changes as a six
point loss In New York Air Brake and
a five-point advance in Sears-Roebuck.
News from lxindon, where the market
is to reopen on Monday, acted as a
deterrent to any trading on the bull
side.
