PAST WARS THAT EX PLAIN"
THE PRESENT CONFLICT
"The Story of Europe" Includes a
Vivid Description of Historic Rat
tles That Have Influenced tlie
Present Situation
While universal peace Is tho de
clared ambition of civilization, and
much has been accomplished through
diplomatic channels in the settlement
of great international issues, war has
been the great spectacular factor in
the fate of nations. This is true since
the dawn of history, and has remained
quite as true during the century of cir
cumstances that have led up to tho
stupendous conflict now in progress.
It is necessary, therefore, that in trac
ing the thread of these circumstances.
"The Story of Europe" should de
scribe the great battles on land and
sea that have been fought by Euro
pean nations in the last hundred years.
The book contains the comprehensive
and thrilling account of the great bat
tles which have made and remade the
map of Europe and which have germi
nated conditions which aro now ripe
for a greater war than all Its prede
cessors. In contrast with the modes
of warfare practiced by the great mili
tary leaders of the past century, tlia
book traces tljeoioV/eJowmftnttcpf mod
ern warfare as It is now being put to
the test in a baptism of fire, it de
scribes the origin and perfection ot
the airship, the submarine, the tre
mendous guns capable of projecting
their missiles twenty miles and more,
and other engines of destruction de
vised by science waging war. It dis
cusses the effect of these refinements
of scientific warfare and points out
some of the changes which they have
made necessary.
Every reader of this paper has the
opportunity now. for a limited time,
to obtain a copy of "The Story of Eu
rope" under the plan of distribution
which we have arranged. Be sure to
cut out the coupon printed on another
page and get your copy of the book
to-day.—Advertisement.
