Aviator Loses Life in
Destroying Zeppelin
London, Aug. 10.—The Times cor
respondent in Brussels, describing the
fighting at Liege, says aerial fleets
were used by both Belgians and Ger
mans. The fighting In midair was de
sultory but deadly. A huge Zeppelin
sailed over Liege during the early
fighting, but was pursued by a Bel
gian aeroplanist, who lost his life In
destroying it.
After the destruction of this Zeppe
lin the Germans confined their aerial
activity to the use of scouting aero
planes, several of which were de-
I stroyed by Bhots from the forts. At
tempts to reach the aeroplanes with
shells were often unsuccessful, how
ever, owln<" to the inability to shoot
high enough.
Two Belgian aeroplanists who were
attacked by the German field artillery
at a moderate height were nearly ren
dered unconscious by a shell whtcn
burst just beneath them. They reached
the ground safely, however, and as
they alighted remarked coolly that
"Theqe Germans shoot badly."

MORE STATE AID TO
BE GIVEN COUNTIES
Dauphin Will Have One Highway
Constructed by the Common
wealth This Autumn
Bids for State-aid contracts for a
road in Dauphin county have just
been advertised by the State Highway
Department, closing September first-
There are eight applications adver
tised, aggregating twelve and three
fifths miles. .
The first one of the applications
upon which bids will be received is
for 5,200 feet of highway in Bigler
Township, Clearfield County, front a
point near the road leading to Pine
Run easterly through the village of
Madera to the line between the Com
ely-McCamley properties. This pave
ment which is to be of brick block, of
the standard width of 16 feet, Is to be
completed by the first of next June.
Another brick block pavement to
be completed by the first of July
Is in West Berwick Borough, Col
umbia County, extending from the
Briar Creek Township line by the way
of Front street to the Berwick Bor
ough line a distance of 8,552 feet.
In South Hanover and Derry Town
ships, Dauphin County, about three
and one-half miles of asphaltic con
crete and 7,770 feet of brick block
pavement is to be constructed from
Swatara Station to the Philadelphia
and Reading Railway to tWe West-
Hanover-South Hanover Township
line by the way of the road from
Hanoverdale. This highway is to be
completed by August first next.
In Finnleyville Borough and Union
Township, Washington County, 10,050
feet of asphaltic concrete and 7,770
feet of brick block pavement Is to be
constructed on the road running from
a point near the property of G. Crook
ham at the end of the improved road
to the Finleyville Borough line and
through Finleyville Borough -by the
way of Washington, Brownsville and
Sheridan Avenues to the Union Town
ship line a total distance of about
three and one-half miles. This road is
to be completed by September first,
1915.
Another brick block pavement to be
laid will be in New Eagle Borough,
Washington County, where more than
three-fourths of a mil© Is to be laid
from the improved road in Carroll
Township along Sproul Route No. 247
in a southeasterly direction. This is
to be completed by the first of July.
A little more than a mile of improv
ed highway is to be built In Galeton
Borough, Potter County, extending
from Main and West streets over
West street to Union street, thence
over Union street to Germanla street,
thence on Germania street to fifth
street and thence over Fifth street to
the West Branch Township line. Al
ternate bids will be asked on Amiesite,
Warrenite, Filbertine, Unionite, and
course concrete, brick block pavement
and asphaltic bituminous pavement,
penetration method. This road is to
be completed by July first next.
A brick block pavement is to be
completed August 1, 1915, in Franklin
Township, Greene County. This road
is being readvertisod and extends
nearly three miles along Smith Creek
Road.
in Duryea Borough, Luzenrt County,
about one-fourth of a mile of brick
block pavement is to be laid from the
Avoca Borough line along the Main
street to the Lackawanna County line.
This Is to be completed by the first of
December of this year.
John L. L. Kuhn Low
Bidder For Distribution
of State Documents
John L. h. Kuhn, of this city, former
State printer, was low bidder on the
shipping of State publications and
Charles H. Miller, also of this city, low
on the drayage for the yearly con
tract for distribution of State docu
ments from August 15 when bids were
opened to-day by A Nevin Pomeroy, su
perintendent of printing. Joseph Mont
? ornery, of this city, who had the con
ract last year, raised his bid from
25 to 76 cent* per thousand. Mr. Kuhn
bid less than Mr. Montgomery took
the contract for last year.
The total cost of distribution of doc
uments was $8,354.37 for the period
from August 15 to July 1, of which
$546 was expended for packing, the
rest being for mailing, express and
Other charges.
The bids were, by the 100, John L. L.
Kuhn 23% cents for shipping, and 20
cents for drayage; C. H Miller, 7
cents for drayage; P. Rettew 83 3-10
for packing and 24% for drayage;
Joseph Montgomery 75 and 12%; G. W.
Keever 30 for shipping.
The contract will be let in a dav or
two. About 900,000 documents have
been handled this year.
Sugar Has Risen $1.20
Since England Took
Hand in Europe's War
An advance of $1.20 a hundred
pounds on granulated sugar since the
announcement that England would
take a hand In the European war. was
reached to-day when a quotation of
$5.80 per tfundred was delivered by
wholesalers In Harrlsburg.
"We confidently expect that sugar
will go up to $7 a hundred or perhaps
more/' said a wholesale grocery deal
er to-day.
Austrians Reach Basel
to Reinforce Germans

Rome correspondent of the Exchange
Telegraph Company forwards a de
spatch from Basel, Switzerland, saying
that the Austrian troops have arrived
there coming by way of Constance.
They comprise 30,000 men of the 14th.
Corps under command of the Grand
Duke of Tuscany, which were with
drawn from Tyrol to prevent them be
ing sent against the Servians.
They will reinforce the German
troops encamped at Istein, where the
Germans are massing In the hills and
in the fortifications, following the
French success in Alsace.

Mrs. Bertha Wlnfleld.
Mrs. Winfleld was convicted by Al
derman C. E. Murray of the Third
Ward, on July 23. on a charge of
violating the State and City health
laws governing midwlves.
It was testified that Mrs. Winfleld
had failed to report several cases of
eoro eyes in children. Alderman Mur
ray fined Mrs. Winfleld <SO and or
