612 North Front street which was oc
cupied by Mr. and Mrs. Fleming up to
their removal six years ago to New
York city, has since been occupied un
der lease by Frank Payne.
It will probably be a year before
the Civic Club can legally take posses
sion of their new quarters. None of
the officers have as yet received official
notice of the bequest, but they to-day
expressed themselves as highly grati
fied over it. At subsequent meetings
of the club nlans covering the disposi
tion of the mansion and its use as a
clubhouse will be made, although, ac
cording to Civic Club members, it is
too early as yet to say anything defi
nite in this regard.
The. assessed value of the property
is $26,000. Council will likely be
asked to exempt the property from
taxation. It is admirably adapted as
it stands for club purposes, being of
Old English design built of gray stone
with stucco facades and cornices, red
tiled roof and diamond-paned win
dows overlooking the river. A river
wall of hewn stone skirts a sloping
lawn. • Wide porches surround the
house. The grounds contain hydran
geas and lilacs in profusion and low
hedge of scarlet sage. The interior is
beautifully finished. The rooms are
large and high-ceilinged and finished
in hard wood. Beneath the staircase
is an open fireplace.
Mrs. Fleming was an active mem
ber of the Civic Club during her resi
dence here.
Among other provisions of the will
that bequeaths the mansion to the
Civic Club are clauses providing that
Thomas Victor Hammond, a brother,
receive the Income from $30,000 dur
ing life and upon his death the sum
shall be divided among his children.
Edward Hammond, another brother
and Adeline, a sister, receive equal
shares in the residuary estate. Henry
Sanderson, a friend, receives $15,000
and numerous objects of art and books
"in recognition of his unselfish and
loyal interest in my affairs." Nieces
and nephews are willed valuable jew
els and heirlooms.
Prefers Arrest to Loss
of His Bank Book
Preferring arrest to the loss of his j
bank book, William Silfon, aged 17
years, gave himself up to the police
last night. Young Silfon with thirteen
others were shooting crap at Seven
teenth and Calder streets yesterday
afternoon. The shooters were kneeling
over a gingham cloth when Sergeant
Page and Paul Shelhas', motorcycle
officer, came in sight.
One man was captured, Nick Hum
mer, aged 24 years. The others were
chased across the creek and got away
in the fields. Three coats, 86 cents,
two hats and one handkerchief were
left behind. One coat belonged to
Young Silfon and in the inside pocket
was a bunk book. The raid was made
about 4 o'clock.
One hour later Silfon called at the
police station and gave himself up.
Both Hummer and Silfon posted a for
feit until to-day, when each received
a tine of $5.
Mayor Gets Two "Fivers"
For Lost Baseball Book
In the mail for John K. Royal to
dav was a plain white envelope con
taining five-dollar bills. It was
conscience money and came from the
four young men who found Mayor
Royal's baseball book and had been
seeing baseball games at His Honor's
expense. A brief note without signa
tures gave the information that the
money was payment in full for the
book and that the finders would keep
the book.
While Mayor Royal is now in a po
sition to purchase another book, he is
not clear as to whether the book was
lost or stolen. No names were made
public at the police station, but two
of the young men who had the book in
their possession for a time say the
book was found at Island Park. Each
person who used the book figured in a
series of sales and purchases. Fear
ing there might be serious trouble, the
four persons. It Is believed, raised the
price of the book, mailing the money
to Mayor Royal last night.
