TRADING CONTINUED
DULL DURING WEEK
Passage of Canal Tolls Repeal Accounted an Influence in
Favor of Railroad Shares
New York, June 13. Strong influ
) ences were brought to bear on the
, stock market this week, but trading
continued to be dull, with unusually
narrow fluctuations. The undertone
was firm most of the time, but the de
mand was poor and in spite of the
scarcity of stocks no response such as
might ordinarily be expected was made
to favoring developments. Of these,
perhaps the most important were the
I Government's reports on crop condi
tions at the end of May, and the
Shreveport rate decision. Passage by
the Senate of the canal tolls repeal bill
was accounted an Influence in favor of
railroad shares. Progress of the Mexi
can mediation conference, in spite of
fears of a rupture once or twice dur
ing the week, encouraged operations on
the long side. One of the foremost
factors in sustaining the market was
the expectation of a decision before
many days in the freight rates case.
The United States Steel tonnage fig
ures Indicated that new business during
May had been at the rate of less than
half the corporation's capacity. Incom
ing orders since June 1, however, were
reported to be on a larger scale. De
mand for copper metal increased, fol
lowing a general cut to fourteen cents.
The export movement of gold reach
ed extraordinary proportions. Nearly
$20,000,000 was engaged during the
week, establishing a record for New
York.
