There Is much apprehension as to
the Colonel's physical condition. Noth
ing was said in the wireless message
last night concerning the ex-Presl
dent, but Capt. Andrew Alexander of
the Dunstan, which arrived yesterday,
told frankly of the extreme weakness
of Col. Roosevelt when the latter
boarded the Dunstan at Mauaos.
Capt. Alexander' a report of the
Colonel's health, combined with the
arrangements made by the ex-Presi
dent's family to take him off the
steamship at Quarantine and hurry
him to Oyster Bay, increased the con
cern as to his condition.
Only the members of Col. Roose
velt's family will go down the bay
with Mr. Stanford to meet him. "A Dal
zell tug has been chartered to take him
off .the boat at Quarantine and go di
rectly to Oyster Bay. That it is the
Colonel's wish not to have a public re
ception there is on doubt, because he
sent messages to his family and to
his poliUcal friends insisting that any
plans for a recepUon be abandoned.
The arrangements made by his fam-
I ily have led many to believe that the
Colonel still may be suffering from the
hardships he endured in the Jungle.
Colonel Shows Weakness
Capt. Alexander of the Dustan told
the reporters last night of his meeting
with the Colonel and described his ap
pearance. Colonel Roosevelt came to
the landing place of the Dunstan at
Manaos in an automobile with Profs.
George K. Cherrie and Leo E. Miller,
naturalists of the expedition; Kermit
Roosevelt and Dr. Cajazeira, a surgeon
of the Brazilian navy, who had been
attending the Colonel.
It was noted that the Colonel had
lost much flesh and was quite weak,
being unable to board the ship with
out assistance. He went immediately
to Capt Alexander's room and re
mained there nearly all the time until
the last day of the trip down the
Amazon, when he came out and spent
most of the day on deck. He had im
proved much in appearance in the
four days, but still looked thin and a
bit peaked.
He said his loss in weight and
health had been partly due to short
ened fare, the party going on less than
half rations much of the time, and
partly to the hardships of the Brazil
ian wilds.
A photograph shown to Capt. Alex
ander by one of the Roosevelt party
depicted Kermit Roosevelt with a ho
boish growth of beard grown in the
jungle. After shaking hands with the
skipper and the officers, including the
engineer, Col. Roosevelt left the Dun
ston In the harbor of Para and board
the Aidan. He was still weak, but
much brisker than when he boarded
the Dunstan.
Col. Roosevelt, it was announced
yesterday, will spend ten days at
Oyster Bay and this vicinity and then
sail for Madrid to attend Kermlt's
marriage to Miss Belle Willard. He
has expressed impatience to see his
little grandson, born in his absence to
Mrs. Richard H. Derby, who was Miss
Ethel Roosevelt.
The collections of the expedition in
clude 2,000 mammal and 500 speci
mens of birds. The mammal collec
tion is the largest received at one time
by any American museum of natural
history and one of the largest that has
ever come out of South America.

Vera Cruz. Most fugitives from the
capital are welcomed by the residents
of Vera Cruz but they found it diffi
i cut to separate Urrutia from the Hu
i erta regime notwithstanding the pub
i 11c dropping of the man by the pro
i visional president.
'Why, It would appear that they
think 1 am still working for Huerta,"
said the big-framed fugitive, as he
paced up and down his room in front
of his wife, whose eyes were red with
weeping. ' They refuse to believe that
I, too. am in danger of my life from
that man. Some of them think I a
down here on some sort of secret mis
sion for Huerta and others that I am
here conniving at some plot or other
with the rebels.
"1 assure you that I am doing
neither. lam trying to get away from
scenes and situations that have grown
hateful to me and which are blotting
the record of my country.
"Not since the tenth of September
have I had anything to do with the
government and only once in all that
time have I seen Huerta."
Greater Than Napoleon.
Dr. Urrutia referred to an incident
at a dinner at f'hapultepec last fall
when Qtierido Moheno and Jose Maria
Lozano. member of Huerta's cabinet
drank the health of Huerta, styling
him as the modern Napoleon and laud
ing him as being even greater than
the Corslcan.

stand before the President and oppose
the idea of placing a halo about the

uttered the sentiment most pleasing
to him.
"And that sentiment is one I yet
hold," declared Dr. Urrutia. "I am not
in accord with the administration, Its
plans nor policy, and have openly told
the President 30. And yet they accuse
me of intriguing for him."
Dr. Urrutia expects to sail on the
steamer Ypiranga. Should the dem
onstration against him continue ho will
be afforded a refuge on the cruiser
Prairie until the Ypiranga sails.

The resignation of Jose Maria Lo
zano, minister of communications and
public works, has caused much specu
lation in political circles. It came un
expectedly but Is said to have no great
political significance. The causes of
the resignation are not as yet known.
The minister of Interior visited Lo
zano yesterday and thanked him In
the name of the president, for his
services.
Archbishop Driven Oat

Mors y Del Rio was driven out of
Mexico City by Provisional President
Huerta. according to information

came to the archbishop with a warn
ing from Huerta that he would do well
to leave the country.

Saltilio to take measures against the
American consul, John B. SUllman.
General Blanquet, the minister of
war, Is authority for the statement
that fierce fighting Is In progress north
of the city of Tfplc and that the fed
erals have gained the advantage.
