STOCK MARKET MOVES
FROM NARROW GROOVE
In Many Cases, Lowest Levels of Present Year Were
Reached in Wall Street

New York, April 18. The stock
market moved, this week, out of the
narrow groov which it had followed
for some time. The firm undertone ol
the previous month was lost, and prices
gave way at times rr.pldly. In many
cases the lowest levels of the year were
reached.
The decline was attended by increas
ed activity on the short siue of the
market. Sharp bear raids were of
dally occurrence, being directed most
frequently at Union Pacific, Steel and
Lehigh Valley. The vulnerability of
the market to these attacks reflected
Increasing bearish sentiment owing to
the continued backwardness of trade,
t. e dwindling earnings of railroaus
and the further delay In the freight
rates case. The critical state reached
in this country's relations with Mexico
also ter.ded to depress stocks. This
situation was used effectively by tho
bears, although the market nowed no
nervousness on this account.
Tho success of New York City's sale
of $65,000,000 of 4% per cent, bonds
was expected to result In numerous of
ferings by private corporations. New
iork Central sold $40,000,000 of bonds
and it was understood that various
other roads, Including Baltimore and
Ohio and St. Paul, were In the market.
