Inquiries Into the physical condition j
of the Philadelphia and Reading sys
tem by the Interstate Commerce Com
mission began yesterday, when Chief
Engineer William Hunter and other
Heading officials made a trip over sev
eral of the smaller branches with
Charles Hansol, the Government rep
resentative.
The Harrlsburg Division was covered
this morning, and this afternoon the of
ficials visited points on the Schuylkill
and Susquehanna Branch, Tamaqua and
Newberry Junction.
On Wednesday they will go over a
I portion of tiie Shumokin Division, in
cluding the Herndon Branch. On Thurs
day the special will pass over the East
Penn, C. & P. and Perkiomen Railroud,
Pickering Valley and Colebrook
branches. On Friday the W. & N. will
be looked over and Saturday the Ches
ter Valley, Stony Creek and Northeast
Penn branches will be gono over. The
New York Division was inspected last
week.
Trainmen to Conduct Funeral.—The
funeral of the late preference freight
conductor, J. H. Farling, who died
suddenly at Morrisville, N. J., Sunday,
will take place Wednesday afternoon
at 2 o'clock and will be in charge of
Harrisburg Lodge, No. 382, Brother
hood of Railroad Trainmen. Other
brotherhoods have been invited to at
tend. Railroad men have been re
quested to meet at the lodge room,
Verbeke street, at 1 o'clock. Burial
will be made in the Paxtang Ceme
tery.
Annual Banquet ami Dance.—An
nouncement was made last night by
Engineer John Herbein, of Ephraim
McCleary Lodge, No. 705, B: of L. E.,
and chairman of the committee of ar
rangements for the annual dance and
banquet, Thursday night at the ar
mory that 100 engineers from Read
ing will attend. •
At the Enola I*. It. R. Y. M. C. A.
—The third of a series of entertain
ments will be held Thursday night,
and will be attended by many Harris
burgers. The program will include a
concert by the Enola P. R. R. V. M.
C. A. band, under the direction of
James R. Wheelock; singing by the
Rutherford P. and R. Y. M. C. A. Glee
Club and recitations and readings. On
Friday night the Rev. George B. Ren
shaw who has had extensive experi
ences in Rescue Mission work in New
York City will give an interesting lec
ture, showing various phases and re
sults of the work.

New York, March 17. The cumula- 1
tlvo effect of persistent buying on re
cent recessions was apparent in the
stock market to-day. Failure to un
settle the list by concerted pressure on
New Haven and Kansas and Texas is
sues revealed the strong technical posi
tion of the market und gave an oppor
tunity for a squeeze of the shorts. After
a listless beginning, the market gradu
ally gathered strength, becoming more
active on the upturn.
Buying was promoted by reports of
pending favorable developments in the
Mexican situation, which, while they
apparently had no authentic origin, in
fluenced trading widely. Reports of
business expansion in various lines
stipulated the inquiry for the indus
trials, and thefe was a good absorption
of many railroad shares with high in
vestment ratings.
