Porte has come to the United States to lielp build the great airship of Rodman Wananiaker 111 which an attempt will be made to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. The lieutenant will be one of the pilots if the start is ever made. "There is no doubt In my mind that we shall be successful." said he, "If we did not feel sure of making it. we would not attempt the trip. Nothing is to be left to chance, and every de tail will be carefully figured out be fore the start. "In making the flight I count on ray observations more than anything else. The Idea of leaving anything to guess work does not appeal to me. The use of ordinary instruments in taking ob servations will not be feasible, owing to the altitude, and we are planning a specially designed sextant, which will render the use of the horizon un necessary." Trip Around World at Majestic Theater All of the whirlwind trips around the world, not excluding that made in eighty days by Jules Verne and the better records of more recent newspa per men, went to smash last night when an audience at the Majestic The ater left New York, sailed to England, visited many countries en route and came back home by way of Frisco —| all in two hours. MAX ROBERTSON. 01-I.lt; JAMBS' FIRST CLIENT [From the Popular Magazine.] The first client Ollie James, now a Senator from Kentucky, ever had was an old farmer who had gone up against a shell game in a circus. The old man had sold his farm for $1,750, and had come Into town to put his money In the bank. Ho had it sewed up In the inside pocket of his vest. But, just as he entered the town, he overtook the circus parade. That was too much for him. The hubbub of the animals in their cages, the women bareback riders on the horses, the clowns on the elephants, and t.he bands, and the calliope got into his blood. He followed them back to the grounds, and one of the first things lie saw was a smooth-looking, well-dressed young man. who was saying: "It's pretty easy. Ail you have to do, gentlemen, is to watch the little ball. I bet you $5, even money, that you can't tell me under which shell the lit tle ball rests." "That's a lie!" shouted the old farmer. "I know where that durn little ball is. Take up that thar middle shell." The young man took up the middle shell, and, sure enough, there was the little ball. | "But I'll bet you all the same," he j said, evidently irritated by having his game solved by the old man. | "No So bets! cried the fanner. "I want to bet real money. I'll bet you I SSOO I can tell what shell that thar lit tle thing is under." 1 The smooth young man waved around | iiis shells, manipulated the ball, and the farmer knew It was under the middle shell. He saw it go under the middle shell. It hud to be there. "Don't move a finger!" lie shouted. "Leave It whar it Is. I'll bel you SI,OOO It's under the middle sheil." He was breathing hard now and waving his wallet in the air. "Why don't you bet more'.'" asked the smooth operator, who was really as tounded thut the old man had so much money. "By cracky. I will!" shrieked the farmer. "I'll bet you $1,750 cash, young man, that the ball's under the middle shell. - ' The bet was taken, the money was passed over, and the middle shell was lifted. The little ball was not there. That was how Ollle James got his first case. He took It on shares, the understanding being that he was to get a percentage of the $1,750 If he won. He won. S. I*. C. A. Heavy sell ing of a few stocks caused general de pression to-day. Chesapeake and Ohio's decline reached Ave points by noon and Baltimore and Ohio went down 2%. Both of these stocks were sold heavily by London. Bear specula tors were quick to take advantage of these conditions and offered the prin cipal stocks freely. The appearance of further unfavor able railroad reports for January and the poor showing in gross made by various lines in the last week of Feb ruary, also weakened the railroad list, which relatively was heavier than the 1 Industrials. Traders were reluctant to take stocks except at considerable con cessions and prices fell away steadily until there were numerous losses of one to four points. General Motors lost four points and Kansas and Texas, Pfd., nearly as much, the latter stock reaching the lowest tlgure since 1908. Bonds were easy. Furnished by H. W. WHEN FLANNIGAN WAS FIRED [From the Popular Magazine.] Pat Flannigan, who worked in the Boston Navy Yard, broke the rules of that establishment every day by sneak -1 ing off to a retired spot and smoking 1 his pipe after lunch. He knew that, if ! he should be detected in this breach of discipline, his dismissal would fol low automatically, but his love of to bacco got the best of him. One afternoon, when his pipe was blazim? hot, and the clouds of smoke encircled his head, the captain in com mand of the yard discovered him. f Pat knew his Job was gone, but he , paid no attention to the commandant. "Well, my man," demanded the cap f tain, "what have you to say?" ' Pat said nothing. • 1 "Do you know who I am?" inquired ' the captain wrathfully. Flannigan. puffing steadily on his pipe, made no response. "I am the commandant of this yard!" thundered the officer. Pat turned his head slowly, and look -1 ed up at him. 1 "Shure." he said approvingly; "you've ' got a good job. Hold on to it." i i in | • MONEY FOR SALARIED PEOPLE t and others upon their own names Cheap rates, eacy payments, confiden tial. Adams * Co., R. 304. 8 N.
