FORMER RESIDENT DIES
Mrs. J. R. Scbermerhorn, who lived
in this city thirty years ago, died thiß
morning In Denver, Col., according to
a telegram received by her brother,
J. H. Wagner, Third and Hamilton
streets. Mrs. Schermerhorn was the
daughter of Henry and Jane Wagner,
late residents of this city. She Is sur
! vlved by her brother in this city and a
sister, Mrs. A. E. Boles, of Philadel
phia. The funeral will be held in
Denver on Monday.

The twelve left the courtroom with
the case at 2.60 o'clock yesterday aft
ernoon; it returned this morning at
10.10 o'clock.
All through the night the dozen of
Dauphin's good men and true wrestled
with the problem of whether or not
Mrs. Durkees really had written the
ciueer will and codicil which were
found in the hem of her silk dress.
Mrs. Minnie Moore, named ia the will
as the chief beneficiary of Mrs. Dur
kees' $7,000 estate, had tried to have
the will probated, but some of the
other relatives objected, and the issuo
to determine the validity of the sig
nature was framed. The trial of the
case lasted five days. A feature of the
trial was the testimony of some of the
world's famous handwriting experts.
The jury, it is said, stood 9 to 3 for
hours—and the three were certain the
will was genuine. Finally one of the
three was swung over to the non
believers. The remaining two, it is
said, are both familiar with all kinds
of handwriting and arc expert penmen
themselves.
A high light of the trial was the
presentation of a letter by President
Judge Kunkel to counsel in the case.
This missive had been written to him
and declared that the writer heard
from a Baltimore seamstress that Mrs.
Durkees had said she hid her will in
the hem of her gown.

COMMISSION FAVORS HELP
FOR WIDOWED MOTHERS

State Commission on Relief for Wi
dowed Mothers in an announcement
made public to-day says that there
is a need for government assistance
for the widowed mother, with depen
dent children and that it is feasible to
provide efficient, wise and administra
tive machinery for the State to meet
this need. The commission expects to
make its report to the Legislature on
March 16.

large speculative orders for the princi
pal stocks, and signs of a better de
mand for a wide assortment of minor
specialties, the market displayed gen
eral strength for a time to-day. Ap
fiearance or railroad statements, includ
ng Heading's, showing further de
creases in earnings, had only u tempo
rary Influence and it was not until
acute weakness developed in Chesa
peake and Ohio that the upward move
ment was checked.
The provision of Chesapeake and
Ohios note Issue calling for expendi
tures of $17,000,000 for improvements
in the next five years, before dividends
are paid, caused the stock to sell down
five points to 59. Bear operatives made
most of this slump and sold stocks
all through the list, depressing prices
under yesterday's close.
