BENTON INCIDENT
DEPRESSED MARKET
——— j
Foreign Selling Was Influential in Shaping Coarse ol Mar*
ket; Low Priced Stock Unloaded
By Associated Press i
New York, Feb. 28. Apprehensions
of grave developments in the Mexican
situation, as a result of the Benton in
cident, depressed the stock market early
in the week. Foreign selling also was
influential in shaping the course of the
market. Amsterdam unloaded low
priced railroad stocks here, particularly
the shares of systems which are facing
financial reorganization. Later in the
week the market turned. Uneasiness
over the Mexican situation abated and
foreign liquidation apparently was com
pleted. The market made up the losses
of the forepart of the week. Trading
was not heavy, and the whole move
ment was small, except in a few cases.
January railroad reports were de
cidedly unfavorable. In most cases
large decreases in gross earnings were
| shown. Reports of business conditions
were less optimistic than those of last
month, when a general revi vsawla
month, when a general revival was pre-
I dieted. While some further gains were
I made the improvement was less pro
| nounced than had been hoped for. This
was particularly true of the copper and
steel Industries.
The outflow of gold to Europe con
tinued, and money rates developed a
slightly firmer tendency.
