TEiIIMITHY EIGHTH WARD HOLE [Continued from First Page.] were from two to six beds in a room. These latter houses rent the beds by the night for from fifteen to twenty five cents. A room it was learned can be rented for $1.50 a week, or less. At 615 South street, the officials had to climb down a pair of rickety steps to a cellar In which they learned a man lived for fifty cents a week. There was no light here. A lantern without any oil hung from a rafter and the floor was made of roof boards thrown loosely on the ground. A cot and a soap box fur nished the room. The other cellar equally as filthy and dark was found at 510 Straw berry street. At 511 Walnut street the outdpor balconies were boarded off with rough boards with no light by day or night. A corner of the first floor is partitioned off with rough boards. A cot almost fills the hole. There Is a door four feet high. Profit Made From the Holes Profit Is made from these holes, the officials say, by the proprietors who charge on the average of $1.50 a week. Some of these houses bring in $25 to S3O a month more than the rent. The Inhabitants of these lodging houses are for the most part negroes. The owners are said to be Hebrews. Mayor Royal says the purpose of the visit is to learn conditions and clean them out. "Many of these people will have to move because of the Capitol Park Extension," he said this morning, "and we want to clean out the section so they carry nothing to the other parts of the city." Orders were given this morning to Dr. J. M. J. to order the tenants out of the cellars, and this will be followed by a general clean up order. The rear yards of many of the houses which will disappear with the park extension are In such fllty condition that the health of the city Is endangered, and these the health officer will have cleared. The appearance of the officials in "The Ward" caused much excitement. W r hen they arrived there everything was quiet and most of the Inhabitants were in bed. A few minutes only elapsed until every window was occu pied by a pair of curious eyes, and whispered questions as to the mean ing of it all were audible.
