EAR MUFFLERS IRE
USING DENIS
Track Foreman Urged to Watch
Men Who Wear Them to
Prevent Deaths
Because of frequent accidents oc
curring to track laborers who wear
ear mufflers during exceedingly cold
weather, S. C. L.ong. general manager
of the Pennsylvania Railroad Com
pany, this morning issued a warning
to foremen that particular attention
must be paid to the men who wear ,
such mufflers. The notice is as fol
lows:
"Three track laborers were
struck and killed by an extra
freight on December 26 on one
of our divisions at a crossover
while they were engaged In clean
ing snow from switches. All of
these men wore caps with mufflers
to protect their ears.
"The wearing of ear mufflers by
trackmen renders their hearing
less acute while being worn, and
while it is not desirable to pro
hibit the practice of wearing
mufflers, foremen should be
warned to pay particular atten
tion to the men who wear them
in regard to warning the men of
approaching trains. All foremen
should be advised of this at once,
in anticipation of the severe
weather during the next two or
three months."
11. W. Shnnk Appointed. Announce
ment has been inaile at the Hagerstown

Reading-AUentown
Railroad Rumored
Reading. Pa., Jan. 14. A new rail- 1
way possibllltly has been discussed in
Reading financial circles for a few
days. It would mean a double-track,
high-speed electric railway between
this city and Allentown, following
closely the towns now covered by the
East Penn branch of the Reading Rail
way.
It Is said the equipment will he simi
lar to that the Pennsylvania Railroad
is now installing on Its Main I-.ine be
tween Philadelphia and Paoll. The
road would be forty miles long and
the route, It is said, has already been
surveyed.

Hundreds Lose Lives in
Attempting to Swim Gulf
By Associated Press
Miyazaki, Japan, Jan. 14.—A party
of refugees from the stricken Islantf
of Sakura, in the Gulf of Kagoshima,
arrived here to-day. They reported
that the inhabitants of 300 houses,
composing the village of Seto on that
island, lost their way in trying to
reach the seashore and probably all
perished together. The refugees de
clare that hundreds were drowned in
trying to swim across the Gulf of
Kagoshima. They add that the vol
cano of Sakura-Jima has completely
changed its form, several new craters
having opened.
The hall of ashes ceased here to-day
after lasting thirty-six hours. A
heavy rain has cleared the atmos
phere.
SCHi;VI.KII,!, HOAD CASES
MAY BE TRANSFERRED
Word was received at the Capitol to
day that Attorney General Bell had ob
tained from the supremo court a rule
requiring cause to be shown why the
Indictments against Highway Commis
sioner E. M. Bigelow and other officials
of the State Highway Department set
for trial In Pottsville, Friday, should
not be transferred to another county.
This action was a surprise and the
indications are that there will be an
interesting argument as the rule is re
turnable on February 2 and the Schuyl
kill authorities will likely make a
fight. Judge C. N. Brumm, who direct
ed the indictments, was here for the
I Progressive conference to-day, but de
clined to make any comments. At the
Attorney General's Department It was
stated that the matter was in the
hands of the attorney general. Com
missioner Bigelow declined to discuss
the matter.

STEEL UNDER PRESSURE
IN PROFESSIONAL HANDS
Reading and Lehigh Valley Declined During Morning;
Bonds Are Reported Firm
By Associated Press
New York, Jan. 14. Special move
ments among shares of secondary Im
portance provided a cover for profit-1
taking sales In the active list. After
these offerings were absorbed prices
moved upward again, but subsequently
the list weakened.
Steel was under pressure at the
hands of professionals, who based their
operations on the expectation that the
forthcoming quarterly report would be
unfavorable. Fluctuations were nar
row until shortly before noon, when
the whole list moved off. Heading and
Lehigh Valley declined one.
Bonds were firm.
