I now beg leave, briefly, to. call atten tion to the elate of pauperism and crime in the United,States, as disclosed by the census, prieon discipline societies, and other similar associations. By no means, ent,• Would I fie so understood. I aril aware that in Eurtipean countries, •espe• chilly, there are so many clogs to industry, so many burdens to be harlo t , and so much. precariousness in the means of procuring a livelihood, that the honest , and cirtuotiA as well as the idle antivicious, often in .doing it. Here, where wa gaa remunerate better, though desease and affliction should overtake, the laborer, re. For de siOng to free himself from the hartlehips of his condition, and find, adiappier tonne and plenty in eland of plenty, no rine. can find fault. To such our doors have -been al ways open, dud, against them, I trust, they will never be closed.
