of rain—there's another, and another;
there's a thunder clap ! "Just as school
is out, how provoking I" echo a score of
voices; and the pouting little prisoners
huddle together in the school house porch,
and console themselves by swapping jack
knives and humming to p s, tint telling
marvellous storieS'Of gypsies and giants ;
while Miss Prim, the dyspeptic teacher,
shakes her head and the ferule, and de

steal out of doors and amuse themselvaS

Hem come messengers from anxious!

and there's a chaise at the door, for Squire /
Lenox's little rosy (laughter ; and a wa

Irish girl, With a blanket shawl, to carry ,
home lame Minnie May, who is as fragile
as a lily and just as sweet. And there'S
a servant man for Master Simpkins, the
fat dunce, with the embroidered jacket,
whose father owns "the big hotel and
wishes his 8011 to hive a seat all by him
self."
Aud now they are all gene—all save
little Bessie Bell, the new scholar, a little
four-year-older, who is doing penauce over
in that corner for "a utisdeineanOr."
Bessie's mother is a widow. She has
known such bright, soupy days, in . the
shelter of a happy holm', with a dear arm
to lean upon ! Now, her sweet face is sad
Asul r -care a• or a, and when she speaks her
voice has a heart-quiver,in it; but, some
how, when she talks to you, yoU doum notice that her dress is faded, or her bon
net shabby and rusty. Tull instioctkly
touch your hat to her, and treat her very
courteously, as if she were a fine lady.
As I said before, this is little Bessie's
first day at school ; for she BOO: and
warmth and sunshine to her broken-heart
ed mother. But little Bessie Must breve
bread to eat. A sbop.woutan offered her
mother a vatallpittanceto come and help
her a part of every day, but she is not to
bring her child ; so must go to
school, to be out of harm's way ; and her
mother tells Miss Print, its she seats her
on the hard bench, that "she is very timid
RIO tender-hearted; and then she kisses
Bessie's little quivering lip, and leaves
with a heavy heart.
Bessie dare out look up for a few min
uts ; it is all very odd and strange, and
if she were not MI frightened she would
cry aloud. By-and-by she gains a little
courage, ana peeps out from beneath her
drooping eye-lashes. Het little pinafore
neigftbor, giving her a sweet smile, makes
her little sail heart so happy', that she
' throws her dimpled arms about her neck,
and toys (out loud) glove you !"
Poor, alLetionate little Bessie ! She
didn't kuow that that Wild a "misdemean

a "School Ormonittee." .Miss. Prim had;
and Miss Prim never wasted her lungs
talking; so she leisurely untied her black
silk apron front her virgin waist, and pro
eeeded to make an African of little Bes
sie, by pinning it tightly over her faeeiind
head—au iu wen t ion which herself anti "the
Committee" considered the ne plus ultra
of discipline. Bessie struggled, and said
"she never would kiss.• amybody again
