his witness are quite moderate, as yet, in declaring
that General Taylor only whipped his slave, in
stead•of alleging, at once, that he killed him and

every thing by deposition. We remember that,

This is the same story that has been hatched out
on therm of every Election einem the origin of
the Native party, by the reckless demagogues who
preside over and direct the movements of the Lo
"fr° girt, is Brat and lottaided to effect
theCATHOLIC vote of the interior. The story
has been easeteuated and rerantateucted so ellen,
and has been staring us in the face in glaring cap
itals during so many election campaigns, that it
has now lost the charm of noveiry—that of TIIUTEI
it never did possess
Two years ago a similar combination wss charg
ed upon the Whigs—and yet the returns of the
electiep that year proved that the Whigs lost three
out of four members of Congress in the city and
county, and the entire county Legislative delega
tion, In cpmequence of the bitter opposition made
to their candidate/by the Natives I Thls year the
Whigs have nominated full Whig tickets is every
district, both in the city and euunty ; and so far
from a coalition between them and the NatiVes,
having been effected. the Philadelphia papers of
Monday announce that a large Whig meeting on
Saturday evening, in the let district, WAS BRO
KEN UP av z NATIVES pepping the place of
meeting, and so intertoPting the Proceedings, as to
compel an adjournment at an early hoar ! We
mention this one single fact, as an evidence of the
utter falsity of this last card of our opponents.
The secret of the whole matter is simply this—
that all accounts agree as to the certainty of Gov.
Johnston receiving a very large vote In the Eastern
section of the State--especially in the city of Phil
adelphia, where his honesty, capacity, and admin
istrative talents are se well known, and where Mr.
Lefigaierh, his opponent, is equally well known as
• hitter, proscriptive partisan. Alarmed at this
aspect of matters, the attemptas again made to
play the demagogue in the interior of the State, by
akettempt to excite a prejudice on the part of the
CATHOLIC portion of our G3llow citizens against
the Whig candidate, and thus, if possible, save
Looofecoism from the threatened ruin, In this
miserable demagoguism the Coreerikr is disposed
to play second-fiddle to the pensioned Custom
house libeler that writes for the "Pennsylvanian.'
That the gross insult to the honesty and intelli
gence of our Catholic fellow citizens, developed by
this miserable attempt to drag down Religion into
thy arena of party turmoil, will be properly resent
ed at the polls, we have no question. We have
referred to the matter, simply to bring to the no•
tiers of our readers the desperate game to which 00 r
opponents have been compelled to resort, and to
warn them against it.
THE LAST CARD.
TUT AT $6,000.
Within the last fortnight the honest people of
this District have been awakened to the fact that
the most desperate means are being employed to
defeat Dr. N sa—that a large amount of money
has been introduced, to be used in BUYING Ul'
VOTES for the Administration candidate. 14,-
0011),, it seems, is the argument which, it is reck
oned, can constrain the true and uncorrupted yeo
manry of York and Adams county into sending a
sycophant to Washington, to cringe in base sub
serviency to Southern domination, and to vote for
Free-trade 550 mhontry ! Well, the vile and cor
rupt scheme is known. It is right that the people
should know it, to execrate it. The fraud has
been charged home--how do the accused act!—
Just so as to FA VOR THE TRUTH OF THE
CHARGE! firmest men would have shown their
hands—the gaily have other devices.
A very suspicious circumstance has occurred in
our place—one which to ns carries with it full cor
roboration of the opinion which so widely prevails
that the fraud Aas brew attempted, and WILL BE I I
PERSEVERED IN ! A day or two since,
JOEL B. DANNER, the Locofoco candidate
for Congress, was seen on the corners of our
streets with a letter in his hand, asserting to the
faithßil " that he had received it from Washing
' ton City, with the information that the Whigs of
this county hid written to Washington for
000 tc be expended in the effort to defeat his
(Danner's) election to Coupes . The letter pur
ports to come front the Post-Master General, and
the information purports to be derived from one of
the Spies in the employ of the Post-office Depart
ment, who had been sent to a Whig meeting in
Washington to ferret out the doings of the Whig
Part.,
What think you of that, honest friends Is
there a man in the community, who has brains,
that believes a woad of it—believes that ever such
a letter was waived 1 Will there one Whig, who
can feel an insult tobirnself and fallow-whirs, vote
for a candidate that aspires to the honorable sta
tion of Congressmen, and yet runs with greedi
ness to retail such political swill--the shallowest
falsehood, and the most pitiable absurdity I Why,
in the Shakeperian dialect of Henry. the tragedian
of Democracy. "the fellow's a fool, or mad." No
—not that, either I There is something under
this. It shows where the shoe pinches. Detected
at their own miserable attempts at corruption, and
anxious to evade the indignant condemnation of
the honest voters of the district, it is attempted to
divert honest scrutiny from the infamous scheme,
and to let the guilty escape, by raising the cry of
"stop thief !" It is • trick to cover the fraud—it
is "firing against the !"
"A letter from the Post Master General ! 4

THE PLOT DETECTED
Mr.
Roth Withdrawit-s-Mr. Fickes
the -Locofoco Candidate I
'Last week Mr. JONAS ROTH,was in Gettysburg and authorized a contradiction of the report that
he had withdrawn from the canvass—affirming that "$5O" could not buy him off. This morning he again made
his appearance, and, after an interview with the Locofoco Borough Dictators, dinas us to announce that he is no
longer a candidate ! What has occurred within one.week to bring about the change—whe'ther the "$5O" have
been used—whether more was required—or whether the National Administratios fund has been resorted to—we
cannot tell. , One thing, however, is certain. Mr. Roth is off the field, and Mr. Fickes has been a,dcfplted . $ 7 , the
Borough Leaders as the Locofoco Candidate ! Upon this movement we have neither time'nor room for the corn
meets we should like to offer. The necessity is, however, in part obviated by the annexed Addresslitinai
County Gortimittee---to which we invite the serious attention ogivery Voter in the County. We-leaei tinvery .
FREEMEN to decide whether this corrupt bargain shall receive his approval. We leave it to the candid, ingen
uous members Of the Whig party, who may have hitherto thought of voting for Mr. Fickes under the babel that be
was still steadfast in his fidelity to Whigism and would give no countenance to Locofocoisro, to determine if they
can do so now, and thus join hand in band in this movement with the bitterest and most malignant of mar po/ifieal
opponents ! We leave it to the honest, independent, self-thinking Democrats thrneighont the minty to decide ,
whether they are to be thus transferred from one candidate to another, like Cattle to the highest bidder, "lingerer it
may suit the purposes of the corrupt clique of Leaders in this Borough, who seem to arrogate to themselves not
only the right of thinking for you, but of trafficking with regard to your suffrages as the Southern Slave-driver
does with his Slaves in the Slave-markets of the South !
FELLOW WHIGS :—'l'he duty devolves upon us of informing you that a bargain has this rimming been
consummated by which JONAS ROTH has retired from the field, and is no longer a candidate for the Sheriffalty.
He has been in daily conference with the Locofoco leaders in this town for the past week. But yesterday he an
nounced that he was in honor bound to run—that his tickets were distributed, and that he would not decrme. To
day he retires from the contest, and WILLIAM FICKES IS THE ADOPTED CANDIDATE OF THE
LOCOFOCO PARTY. The object ofthis movement, on the very eve of the election, is to secure the defeat
of our Candidate on the Whig Ticket—EPHRAIM SWOPE. Shall this plot succeed? Will the Whigs of
the County who have been disposed to favor Mr. FICKES, thus allow themselves to be leagued with Loeofo
ism by REGULAR CONTRACT? Shall the Locofoco leaders thus sport with the kind feelings of Fickes Whip ?
We ask you, NOW, that this outrage has been attempted—now, that DANNER & CO. have shown their
hand in a schetne, that has been in process of formation for weeks, and is now fully developed, to USE YOU
to accomplish their PARTY purposes, and defeat a part of your County Ticket—to PAUSE and REFLECT.—
Will you, by your vote or your influence, give countenance to this conspiracy ? Shall your hand or your tongue
lend their aid to further this plot?
Mr. }ICKES is no longer an " Independent" Candidate. I-le is now shackled by promises, and in the
keeping of the Locolbcos. lie is BOUND 11l run as THEM Candidate, and ammo to subserve THEIR purposes.
We appeal to you as FELLOW'WHIGS—Whigs ! from principle—Whigs! that would scorn any combina—
tion with Locofocoisrn—Whigs ! that have participated in the victories we have won in the " Young Guard" in
the years that have passed—NO . l"f° BO AT to the stroke that is aimed at your own political friends—not to
throw yourselves into the arms of your enemies.
We are not able now to learn HOW this union of force was effected, or what MEANS and PROMISES
were used. We point you to WHAT HAS BEEN DISCLOSED, and we put it to you, SHALL TIIF. SCHEME:
SUCCEED?
Our duty is performed in warning you of the consequences that may follow your endorsement of it.
Whatever you MAY HAVE thought—whatever may huve been your determination BEFORE this day, as to Mr.
FICKES, we HOLD trim UP TO YOU NOW as the REGULAR LOCOFOCO CANDIDATE FOR SHERIFF I!!
Your own personal interests—the character you desire to maintain in the Whig ranks—your hopes that the
Country is soon to be REDEEMED from the misrule of Locofocoism by the election of the GALLANT TAYLOR—
the great importance of the election of our Candidate*, JOHNSTON, MIDDLESWARTH, and NES—and the
certainty that our UNITED effort is demanded to accomplish these objects—ALL, ALL conspire to WARN us, to.
URGE US—to IMPEL US IO MAKE ANY SACRIFICES TO DEFEAT LOCOFOCOISM, WHEREVER WE MAY FIND IT_
Rise, then, above your PERSONAL feelings—stand by your Candidate, Col. EPHRAIM SWOPE, and the
WHOLE WHIG TICKET! Labor cordially, AcitvEt.v, for its success. And to this BOLD EFFORT TO
ENTRAP YOU, let your replrbe like that of old Zack—"WE WILL NOT SURRENDER !"
Your friends and fellow-citizens,
A. R. STEVENSON, 13. F. GARDNER, DAVID IIORNER,
D. NIELLINGER, WM. D. DIMES, GEO. ARNOLD,
D. A. BUEHLER, [Whig County Committee.

Look out for Allied Tickets!
Never was there greater danger of imposiiion

their "volunteer" candidates for county offices.—

any "apostates," (as the Compiler calls them,) on
the Whig ticket, the difference between them and
Mr. Danner lies in this—that while they aposta

apostatized from the true orthodox political church

in glaring capitals. It is still more 'musing to
observe the contrast between the columns of the

A TRUE M'HIO
Maj. W. W. HAXERSLY, of Petersburg,
(York Springs) formerly of Diiisburg, in
this county, was a candidate for Register
and Recorder of Adams County before the
Whig County Convention at Gettysburg
on Monday week, but was not placed on
the ticket. He has since published a card
in which he avows his determination to
support the selected Whig candidates, and
says :
"Although his removal to Adams County has
been of recent date, he trusts he hoe lived here
long enough to be honorably identified with the
progress of Whig principles ; and he would lees
leave to refer, with honest pride, to the gallant
Whigs of our mother County of York, for ample
proofs of his devotion to the same noble course du•

to the time when he left there."
We can bear the most cordial testimony
to Maj. lisszaszv's unflinching attach
ment to and ardent support of the Whig
cause while a citizen of York County ;
and while we regret that he was not suc
cessful this year, we hope that when •she
picks his flint and tries it again," the Whigs
of Adams will reward a faithful soldier in
their ranks, and secure at the same time
the services of an excellent public officer.
