The earth, says the Scientific American, owes more to art than to nature after all. s till: the effect of clover end plaster on sand ivas discovered, our barrens were as. unproductive as rocks. COOKING FOOD FOR STOCK The Albany Cultivator says:—We are frequently asked whether the cooking of food for stock, by steam or otherwise, would be profitable. So far as regards feeeding cattle, we are without any reliable expirlments which hare been made in this country to test this point. The subject hos attracted much attention in Egland and Scotland, and the results of several experi ments there made have ben recorded— These experiments seem mostly to lead to the conclusion, that though in some instances cooked food does produce a greater gain than the sante amount of raw food, yet the ad4antage of the former is not sufficient to ilefrm the expenses. In feeding hogs, however, especially where grain of any 'bud is used, the advantage of cooking seem. generally to be admitted. We are oho Inclined to think that there may be advantages in partially cooking some kinxle of Land for cattle—such al corn stalks, chaff or straw, which by this means becomes more palateable, and the nutri ment they contain rendered more soluble, And more easily assimilated. The whole enbiast of feeding animals, however, is one dioetvineof more thorough investigation than it is his here received, and we would taitiesdi commend it to the attention of of our, agricultural societies. Dr. S. P. Thompscin--:•Dear'Sir: I soneiderit a Crateful duty to publielracknowledge the benefit I have derived from the use DI your invaluable medicine, the Compound Syrup of Tar and Wood Naphtha, In the spring of 1844, 1 Was taken ill with bilious fever, and was very ill for a long time. After I had partially recovered, my physi cian informed me my lungs were affected, and treated me accordingly. His skill had no effect, for instead of getting better, I daily grew worse. I was finally informed by him that "I was incu rable, and must die, and that nothing remained but preparation for another world." My weak ness increased until I was confined to bed; 1 had very severe pains in my breast, side and back, shortnt•ts of breath, and I was so very hoarse that my voice could not be heard, unless the ear was applied close to my mouth. My cough was ter rible, harassing me night and day, so that I could obtain very little rest. While suffering in this way, with no relief, I saw your advertisement in the "Union," of this borough, with the certificate of a lady of Philadelphia appended, which so near ly described my case, that I resolved to try your medicine and its effect upon me. I accordingly sent to your agent, Dr. M'Pherson, and procured a bottle. I had not used more than one-third of it, before the hoarseness left me; I then took it regularly ; the pain in my breast,Src.left me ; the shortness of breath and cough was removed, and I am now able to walk about with renewed health and vigor. You can make what use of this you please. lam willing to give any satisfaction that may be required of me if called on personal. iy. With great respect, I remain your's, &c. JACOB SQUIRE, In.
