The Committee consists of Messrs. Lillie, Fox, Smith of Bradford, Smith of Philadelphia, Kerr, Blair and Schoonover. It is understood that the Committee will enter upon the discharge of their duties immediately, and that the members of the Bar and Court officers in the district' will be summoned to give etidence in the case. tETWe observe among the appointments by the Board of Canal Counniationers, that of Cite. Ztteuta, Eaq, as Collector at Duncau'a Island Bridge. CORRECTION.—The Harrisburg Intelligen ntr complains of injustice having been done to Mr. Keret& in the nodes of his remarks at the liar. riaburg Taylor meeting, and requests us to inform the readers oldie "Star" that the representation that Hr. K. "declared in his speech, against a National Convention," is without the slightest foundation in truth." It always gives us pleasure ! to make an announcement intended to relieve any one claiming fellowship with the Whig party, from so false a position as that imputed to 31r. Kcrxtx; yet in doing so, we cannot but remark as somewhat singular that the same impression should have been entertained by almost every cot respondent from Harrisburg who has alluded to the proceedings of the Taylor meeting. The "In telligences," however, gives the positive contra diction, and the readers of the "Star" will stand corrected accordingly. A word as to the "Intelligener's" allusion to what it is pleased to term the "thresh" and "gem: remade" of those who choose to express a peke. mire for other candidates than Gen. TATLOR Off the Presidency, and who refuse to "go it blind" in his support. We do not know that we exact ly comprehend the allusion of our cotetnporary.—: If it refers to factious attempts to suppress " i fair expression of the popular voice" of the Whig par ty, and force a recognition' of the claims of a par. titular candidate—we beg leave. "in all kindnala," to remark, that the incessant clamor in regard to the 'corruption" and "dictation" of partizan COD. ventions,—"people's candidate,"—"no withdraw• al," and "never surrender;'—which has character+ ized ninetenths of the movements in favor of Gen. TAILOR. (and from which, unless our.meni• ory much misserves us, the rolumne of the fntelti gencer have not been altogether free,) approxi= mates infinitely closer to our ideas of " Arleta" and "gasconade" than anything we have observed in the most ultra press devoted to Gen. Scowl. Of any other candidate. And if the Intelligencer doubts the policy of such a spirit being evinced by any branch of the Whig party, it were perhaps as well that it art to work and remove the "bears" from its own eyes and those of its particular friend; before attempting to detect the "mole" in others: As to our own petition on the ?residential quasi. tion, we wish to bo understood as being in no wino heed/ to Gen.T.ILYLOR. We yield to no one in admiration oldie high military capacity, dWantleas courage, and stern integrity, exhibited in all of his life and character with which the public has been made familiar. Long before the memorable a chievements at Buena Vista had invested the old Hero's brow with ,the full blaze of glory which hip note dazzled and captivated the popular mind, and while some of the presses which now groan under the burden of accumulated eulogies and I laudations of his deeds, were entirely silent, or oc casionally lisped his name with faint praise,—their conductors not having as yet snuffed the direction of the popular breeze—the columns of the " Stir" were devoted to an earnest defence of Gen. *CAI - Loa from the assault of the Administration, then in its incipiency. Nor has any thing since occur. red to shake or diminish our confidence in his • greatness as a soldier, or his integrity as a man.— He is the same Gen. TAYLOR, save only in so tar as his subsequent career has increased and strength ened our admiration of him. Yet, he is not our choice for the Presidency. and never can be until we have some guarantee as to his political predi lections. We take it, that something more than undoubt ed capacity as a general and integrity as a man, are essential to constitute a safe President. A man may be ever so honest, and ever so capable, and vet, if unsound principles of political econo my or unwise counsels are permitted to influence his Administration, he may make a moat danger ous ruler. We mean not by this that suet { would necessarily be the result in the event of Gen. Ta Lea's election to the Presidency. lie may, or may not, make a good President. W hat we wish tnuy is that unless we have sufficient guaranty of his devotion to Whig principles—principles, the recognition of which we believe to be cssen• tial to the true greatness of the country—his un disputed courage, capacity, and honesty are not sufficient to command for him our support for the Presidency. Gen. JICKSON, we have no ques tion, was entirely sincere and honest in all that he did, and believed that he was doing his coun try every possible good; and yet few Whigs, we apprehend, can be found to endorse the wisdom or excellence of his Administration. $4O to $lOO 25 to 40 In supporting Gen. Score we are influenced by no factious spirit, or purely personal feeling. If we urge his claims warmly, it is because we not only believe him to be abunhantly able and holiest—but because we K. NOW him to be a high minded, open-hearted Whig, orthodox on all great questions ofnational policy—because we believe his claim; equal at least, to those of any otherean didstee—and because we believe the chances of a glorious triumph of Whig principles more risfain under his auspices th an. that of any other leader. If, however, the Whig National Convention deter mine otherwise, and present to the country- an ac knowledged ;shill as its candidate, that candidate. shall reoeive ont cordial support.
