THE WEEKLY PATRIOT AND UNION.
As the Centra! oran of the Democrat'c

acquired a lar-e and more diffused circu

in the State. It has heretofore ocenpied

ues to be a valuable organ of the party
' It is not for us, however, to puff our own
work. - If we have been faithful to the
cauee of the party and the country, we
hope every Democrat will make it an ob

adding to oor li?t ot subscribers. Tte low
price of the Weekly in comparison with
- the arr.onnl of matter furnished, make it
one of the cheapest of newspapers. We

The Democracy ol me North will com
mit a fatal error if they accent ttie result cf
the late Presidential election as an indica
tion from the hand of Destiny to relax
their political action until the opening of
the next campaign. The future welfare cf
the republic depends upon ihe politic a
teal and activity of the Democracy durinz
the yerar 1865.
Ti e small rminr'uv of the nopn'ar vote
that elected the Black Republican candi.
dates, considered in view of the extraordi
nary resources of the Administration for
corruption nd cpmpulsion, attests that the
power of the Democracy, on a fair field, it
equal to the vindication of Democratic
principles.
There is one feature in the result of the
Presidential eleciion that goes far to re
concile the patriot to the hard fate of his
country under four years more of Black
Republican misrule, fhe baleful meteor
that lingered m grief while in.onr politirul
atmosphere has vanished for ever. War
Democracy has fulfilled its mission of !i
orzanization, and like any other pestilence
will be remembered only for the evil it
has done.
The issue now before the people is the
final stmsgle between Centeralization and
States' Rights, and no journal is Democrat
ic that" is not the devoted champion of
States' Rihts, the paramount principle of
the Democratic faith.
The New York News needs no testimony
beyond it plain unalterable record to sub
stantiate its claim to b?in; and having
been the mot earnest, able and consilient
States' Rights Journal in the land. We
have no excuses to in vent for modifications
of sentiment, nor have we to pit a I ''ex
pediency' in puliation of inconsistency.
Our path has been straight forward. Oor
columns are before the people, not a line
in them that we would cancel nor senti
ment we would recall, not an assertion
that requires an explanation, not a word
that we regret io have uf.ered. not a ?rin-
i ciple advocated that we. have not stood by
i and will stand by to the last. Such has
j been our pa?t record, so will be our future.
We do not, however, ak the Democracy
to sustain us in our mi.-sion a a reward

Government which
guided our lathers in ihe loimdation of ihe
Republic. The spitii and doctrine of ihe
two first volumes will be fully maintained
in the third volume. We have no compro

despotism. Democracy will be treated,
not as a vary ing policy of ennnirg office
seekers and spoil-hunters, but rattier as an
abiding principle of political economy and
of popular liberty. AH supporters of this
revolutionizing, Aboldion war, will be held
a the enemies of the Democracy. We
shall acknowledge no organization to be
Democratic which doe not hone-tly enun
ciaie ai d support tho principles ot ihe
Kentucky aud Virginia Resolutions of 179S
and the Dred Scott D. cision of the ""Su

prererve these honorable doctrines, the
Democratic party was organized by the
vcy loundersof the Federal Government,
and it remained true to them down lo ihe
