THE BEST PAPElTIx TIIE WORLD.
C. Wood, Ed. and Proprietor
The Democracy of ihe North will com
mit a fatal error if they accept the resell of
the lat Presidential election as an indica
tion from the hand of -Destiny to rela
iheir political action until ihe opening -of
ihe next campaign. The future welfare of
the republic depends upon the politics
zeal and activity of Ihe Democracy during
tha ear 1865. .
Ttie rmall majority of the popular vote
tlirt elected hi Black Republican candi
dal, considered in view of ihe extraordi
nary resources of the Administration for
corruption fend compulsion, attests that Ihe
power of the Dsmocracy, on a fair field, is
equxl to ihe vindication of Democratic
principles.
, There is one feature in ihe result of the
Presidential election thai goes far to re
concile the patriot to the hard fate of his
country under four yenrs more of Plaek
Republican misrule. The baleful meteor
that lingered in grief while in oor political
atmo-phere has vanished for ever. War
Democracy has fulfilled its mission cf dis
organization, and like any other pestilence
will be remembered only for the evil it
. ha done.
The. i"sue row before ihe people is ihe
final struggle between Centeraliziiion and
States' Riyhf, and o journal i Democrat
ic lhai is not the devoted champion of
States' Rights, the paramount principle ol
the Democratic faith.
The New York News needs no testimony
beyond it plain unalterable record to 8b
Mmtiale its claim to being and hav'ma
been ihe mot-t earnest, able and conciiem
Slates' Rights Journal in the land. We
have no excuses to invent for modification
of sentiment, nor have we lo 'pit ad "ex
pediencj" in palliation of inconsistency.
Our put h has been etraigM forward. Our
columns are beloie ibe people, not a line
in them that we would cancel nor senti
ment we would recall, not an assertion
that requires an explanation, not a word
thai we regret io have ut'.ered, not a prin
ciple advocafed that we have not stood by
and will Aland by to the lasl. Such has
been our pas-t record, fo will be our future.
We do not, however, ak the Democracy
to sustain u in our mission a a reward
for the ervice we have done, but in. con
sideration of the eood work that we pro
pose to do. Tha Now Yoik News for 1865
will ool merely imitate its predecessors, it
will excel them, h shall be, r.oi only the
fuesi exponent cf Democialic principle,
boi the best neicpaper in the country.
Heretofore it h is had no superior as a ve
hicle of new., hereafter ii shall have no
equal. In every depariraent of journalism j
we havearrand thai the News Fhall dis
tance competition. It is the only Demo
cratic newspaper in the metropolis that ha J
the advantage of publishing a daily i.-.-ue
with the full dispatches of Ihe Asioi laied
Press, and therefore its machinery for fur
nishing a comp'.e'e record of events is
more perfect than that of any of i:s Dtjmo-,
'cratic cotemporaries. Noiib have auempl
ed latterly, to compete with it ij the publi
cation ot Souther.1 intelligence, as our
system rf exchange with Southern journals
baffles the fr&gacity and enterprise of our
rivals.
A glance at the columns of The News
devoed lo "Southern anil Northern per
sonal." will remark the extraordinary iue
ces that has attended oor enterprise in
that direction. We are in daily . receipt of
letters expressiue the thank of those who,
throuah the medium of the "Personals'' in
The New?, have been enabled to receive
t id i rr as from their fiiends and relatives in
the South, and the heart of many an exile
and wanderer has been gladdened through
lhat instrumentality by words of affection
and hops from those mourned for as dead.
The New York News has become so
popular in the rural district that othe r .Me
tropolitan journals, in publhing their
stereotyped boa.t of 'ihe largest circula
tion of any weekly journal" are constrain
ed to make an exception in our favor It
ii a significant circumstance that since the
Presidential election and consequent de
mise of War Democracy, ihe subscriptions
io this paper have been ujiusually numer
ous. The Agricoliura' Department of The
New York New renders it an " invaluable
companion and assistant to (he farmer ;
and its Cattle, M.nkel and Produce Re
ports are more reliable and full than those
of any other journal.
