The Democracy of Iho North will com
mit a fatal error if they arcept the result of
lie l.it Presidential elaction as an indica
tion from ihe hand -of Destiny to relax
their political action until the opening o
tihe next campaign. The future welfare o
the republic depends . upon the politic a
zal and activity of the Democracy during
the year 1865
The small majority of the popular vole
that elected the Black Republican candi
dates, considered in view of theextraordi
oary .resources of the Administration for
corruption and cpmpulsion, attests that the
power of the Dsmocracy, on a fair field, is
equal to the vindication of Democratic
principles.
There is ont featnre in ih-e result of the
Presidential election J that goes far to re
concile the patriot to the hard fate of hi
country under four years more of Elack
Republican misrule, fhe baleful meteor
that lingered m grief while in oor political
atmosphere has vanished for ever. War
Democracy hasfulh'Ued its mission of di-
L organization, and like any other pestilence
will be remembered only lor .ihe evil it
has done.
' The i.su now before the people i3 the
final stmgglrt between Centeralization and
States' Right, and to journal is Democrat
ic (hat is not the devoted rhampion of
States' Rights, the paramount principle cl
the Democratic faith.
The New York News need no testimony
heyorjd its plain unalterable record to tub
slantiate its claim to being and having
been the most earnest, able and consilient
States' Rights Journal in the land. We
have no excuses to invent for modifications
of sentiment, nor have we to pit a J "ex
pediency" in palliation of inconsistency.
Onr path has been straight forward. Our
columns are before the people, not a line
in them that we would cancel, nor senti
ment we would recall, not an assertion
that requires an explanation, nqt a word
mat we regret io nave ur.ered, not a prin
ciple advocafed that we have not stood by
and will stand by to the last. Such has
been our paft record, so will be onr future.
We do not, however, a?k the Democracy
to sustain us in onr mission a a reward
for the service we have dons, bnt in con
sideration of the good work that we pro
pose to do. Tha Nw Voik News for 1S65
will not merely imiiate its predecessors, it
will excel them. It shall bo, not only the
tmest exponent cf Democratic principle,
but the best newjpaper in the country.
Heretofore it has had no superior as a ve
hicle of news, hereafter it shall have no
eqnal. In every department of journnlim
we have arranged that the News shall dis
tance competition. It is the only Demo
cratic newspaper in the mtropoli that has
the advantage of publishing a daily isene
with the full dispatches of the Associated
Press, and therefore its machinery for fur
nishing a complete record of events is
more perfect than that of any of i:s Demo
cratic colemporaries. None have attempt
ed latterly, to compete with it in the publi
cation ot Souther.i intelligence, as our
system of exchange with Sonthprn journals
bafiles Ike sagacity and enterprise of our
rivals.
A glance at the columns of .The News
devoied fo "Sonthern and Northern per
sonal1' will remark the extraordinary suc
cess that has attended our enterprise in
that direction. We ars in daily receipt cf
letters expressing the thinks of those who,
throosn trie medium oJ the "Personals 7 in
The Ne ws, have been enabled to receive
tidins from their friends and relatives in
the South, and the heart of many an exile
and wanderer has been gladdened through
that instrumentality by words of affection
and hope, from those mourned for as dead.
iii ixew i orn iews nas oecome so
popular in the rural districts that other Me
tropolitan journal's, in pub!".hing their
stereotyped boast of "the largest circula
tion of any weekly journal" are constrain
ed to make an exception in our favor It
is a significant circumstance that since the
Presidential election and consequent de
mise of War Democracy, the subscriptions
to this paper have been unusually numer
ous. The Agricnltnrra' Department of The
New York News render it an invaluable
companion and assistant to the farmer;
and its Cattle, Market and Produce Re
ports are more reliable and full than those
of any ether journal.
The Daily News will forfeit one thou
sand dollars if, in 1he above Departm enN,
competent judges should deny its uperi-
ority.

'Jlhis 2Iaazine will continue (o defend
" the principles of Government which
uuided our fathers in ihe fonndation of he
Republic. The spirit and doctrine of Ihe
two first volumes will b fully maintained
in the third volume. We have no compro
mises io make with error no parley with
despotism. Democracy will be treated,
not as a varying policy of cunnirg office
seekers and spoil hunters, but rather as :tn
abidins principle of political economy and
of popular liberty. All supporters of this
revolutionizing, Abolition war, will be held
as the enemies of the Democracy. We
shall acknowledge no organization to be
Democratic which does not honeMly cnun
ciate and support the principles of the
Kentucky aud Virginia Relictions of 1708
and the Dred Scott Decision of the Su
preme Court, the one asserting Slate Sov
ercinty and the other White supremacy. To
preserve these honorable doctrines, the
Democratic party was organized bv the
vey founders of the Federal Government,
and it remained true to them down to the
fatal and dishonoring departure, at the
commencement of this war. The Old
