. The Democracy ol the North will coin
inii a fatal error if they aeceDt the result of
he latn Presidential election aa an indica
tion from the hand of Destiny to relax
.their political action unt.il the open in o
tihe next campaign. The future welfare o
the republic depends upon the politic k
zeal and activity of the Democracy dunna
ih year 1865.
Tne srn 11 mijirity of the popular vole
that elected the Black . Republic an canui
dates, considered in view of the exiraordi
nary resources of the Administration fo:
corruption and cpmpulsion, attests that the
power of the Democracy, on a fair field, is
equal to ih vindication of Democratic
principles.
There i one feature in the result of thw
Presidential election that goes far to re
coucile the patriot to the hard fa e of hi
country under four y ears more of Flark
Republican mi-rale, fhe baleful meteor
that lingered in griel while in our poliiieal
atmosphere has vanished for ever. -War
Democracy has fulfilled its mission offis
or2anization, and like any other pestilence
will te renumbered only for ihe evil it
Las done.
The issue no before the people is the
final struggle between Centeraliz.ition and
Slates' Rightc, and no journal i Democrat
ic thai is not the devoted champion of
Slates' Rights, the paramount pr;u. ipie ol
the Democratic faith.
Tbe New York News need no testimony
beyond its plain unalterable record ioub
stuntiate its claim to being and bavins
been the most earnest, able and consistent
States' Rights Journal in the land. We
have no excuses to invent for modification
of sentiment, nor have we to plead "ex
pediency" in palliation of inconsistency.
Uur path ha been strai:r:t forward. Our
colu mn are belore the people, not a lina
in them that we would cancel nor nenli
ment we would recall, not an assertion
that requires an explanation, not a word
that we repret io have ut'.ered, not a prin

and will stand by to the last. Such has
been our past record, so will be our future.
We o not, however, ask the Democracy
to sustain us in our mission a' a reward
for the service we have done, but in con
federation of the 20id work that we pro
pose to do. The N-w Yoik News for 1865
will cot merely imitate its predece-sors, it
will excel them. It shall be not only the
t'uest exponent cf Democratic principle,
but the best iiftripaper in the country
Heretoiore it has had no superior as a ve
hicle of new 5. hereafter it shall have no

we have arranqrd thai the News shall dis
tance competition. It is the only Demo
cralic: newspaper in the metropolis that ha
the advantage of publishing a daily is.ue
with the full dipalchtrs of the Associated
Pres, and therefore its machinery for fur-nis-hin
a comp!e:e record of events is
more nerfect than that of auv of i: Drfrno-
Cratic coiemporaries. None havp attempt
