The Democracy of the'Nonb will com
mit a fa: a I error if they accept the result of
he latff Presidential election as an ini'jca
'ion from the -hand of 'Destiny to rela
their political action until the opening o
(the next-campaign. The future welfare o
the republic depends upon the politics
zeal and activity of the Democracy during
tha year 1865.
The small m ijority of the popular vote
that elected the Black Republican candi
dates, considered in view of the extraordi
nary resources of the Admin'iMtration for
corruption and cprapubion, aue&is that the
power of the Democracy, on a fair field, is
equal to the vindication of Democratic
principles. ,
There is one feature in ihe result of tha
Presidential election that goes far to re
corjcile the patriot to the hard fate of hi
country under four years more of Black
Republican misrala. fhe baleful meteor
that lingered in grief whil in onr political
atmophere has vtmished for ever. War
Democracy has fulfilled its mission of dis
organization, and like any other pestilence
will be remembered only for the evil it
fcas done.
The 'issue now bofore-the people is the
final sirnsnle between Centeraliztion and
Slates' Rights, and no journal i Democrat
ic that is not the devoted . champion of
Slates' .Rights, the paramount principle ol
the Democratic faith.
The New York News needs no tetimony
beyond it plain uoaherable record tomb
s-UntUte its claim to being and havins
been the mo-t earnest, able and consistent
Stales' Rights Journal in the land. We
have no excuses to invent for modifications'
of sentiment, nor have we to plead "ex
pediency" in palliation of inconsistency.
Our path has been rait forward. Our
columns are belore the people, not a line
in them that we would cancel nor senti
ment we would ri'call, not an ns-eriion
that requires an explanation, not a word
(hat we regret io hive uttered, not a prin
ciple advocafed that we have not stood by
and will stand by to ne last, fcuch ha
been our pai-t record, so will be our future.
We do not, however, a-k the Democracy
to sustain us in onr mission as a reward
for the service we have dontf, but in con
fiideration of the uor.d work that we pro
.p?e to do. The Niw York News fiar 1665
will oot merely imitate its predece-sor, it
will excel them. It shall be, rot only the
tiuest exponent cf Demociatic principle,
but the best ncicspapei in the country
Heretofore it has had no superior as a ve
hicle of new?, hereafter it shall have no
ejual. In every department of journalism
we have arrant. d that ihe News shall dis
tance competition. It is the only Demo
cratic newspaper in the metropolis thHt has
the advantage of publishing a daily iue
with the full dispatches of the Associated
Pres, and therefore its raachiuery for far
nishing comp!e:e record of eveiiis is
more perfect than that of any of i's Demo
cratic cotemporaries. None have a'tempt
ed latterly, to compte with it in the publi
cation ol Souther. i intelligence, a onr
eyMem of exchange wiih Santhern journals
lafilt,s lie Hgacity aud euterrise of" our
rivals.
A glance at the-columns of The News
devoed ta Southern and Noriheru per
sonali" will remark the extraordinary suc
cess that has attended our enterprise in
that direction. We are in daily receipt .f
letters expressing th s thanks of those who,
through the medium of the .'Personals'' in
The News, ha ve betui enabled io receive
tidings from their friends and relatives in
the South, and the b sart of many an exile
and wanderer ha ben gladdened through
:bat itistramenlality by words of affection
and hope from those mourned for as dead.
The New York Njws has become o
popular in the rural districts tha; other Me
tropolitan journals, in publishing their
stereotyped boat of "the largest circula
tion of any weekly journal" are constrain
ed to make an exception in our favor It
is a significant circumstance that since the
Presidential election and consequent de
mise of War Den.ociacy, the subserip:iotis
to this paper have Leen unuraally numer

New York News, renders it an invaluable
companion and assistant to the. farn.er ;
