The Democracy ol the North will com
mit a fa:al error if they acceDl the result of
he lat Presidential election as an indica
tion from the hand of Destiny to rela
thfir political action until the opening o
tine next campaign. 1 he future welfare o
j the republic depends upon the politics
I ztal and activity of the Democracy during
the year 1865.
Tne small majority of the popular vote
that elected the Black Republican candi
dates, considered in view of the extraordi
nary resources of the Administration for
corruption and cpmpolsion.. attests that Ihe
power of the Democracy, on a fair field, is .
equal lo the vindication of Democratic
principles.
There is one feature in ihe result of the
Presidential flepiion that goes far to re
coocile Ihe patriot to the hard fate of hi
country under four years more of Black
Republican misrule, fhe baleful meteor
thai lingered in grief while in our political
atmo-phere has vanished for ever. War
Democracy has fulfilled its mission of dis
organization, and like any other pestilence
will be remembered only for the evil ii
has done.
The issue now before the people is the
final struggle between Centralization and
"States' Rights, and no journal j Democrat
ic that is not the devoted champion of
Slates' Rights, the paramount principle of
the Democratic faith.
The New York News needs no testimony
beyond its plain unalterable record lo sub
stanliate it? claim to bring and having
been the mot earnest, able and consistent
Slates' Rights Journal in the land. We
have no excuses to invent for modifications
of sentiment, nor have we to pit ad "ex
pediency" in palliation of inconsitlencv.
Our path has been straight forward. Our
columns are before the people, not a line
in them that we would cancel nor senti
ment we would recall, not an assertion
that requires an explanation, not a word
that we regret io have nt'.ered, not a prin
ciple advocated that we have not stood by
and will stand by to the last. Such has
been our part record, so will be our future.
We do not, however, ask ihe" Democracy
to sustain us in our mission as a reward
for the service we have done, but in con
sideration ot the sood work that we pro
pose to do. The Nw York News for 1865
will not merely imitate its predecessors, it
will excel them. It shall be, not only the
truest exponent cf Democratic principle,
bot the best iieicspxper in the country.
Heretofore it has had no superior as a ve
hicle of news, hereafter it shall have no
equal. In every department of journalism
we have arranged that the News shall dis
tance competition. It is the only Demo
cratic newspaper in the metropolis that has
ihe advantage of publishing a daily issue
with the full dispatches of the Associated
Press, and therefore its machinery for fur
nishing a uomple'e record of events is
more perfect than thai of any of i:s Demo
cratic coiemporaries. None have attempt
ed latterly, to compete with it in the publi
cation ol Southern intelligence, as our
system of exchange with Southern journals
LarHes rl.e sagacity and enterprise of our
rivals.
A glance at the columns of The News
devoted lo 'Southern and Northern per
sonals" will remark the extraordinary suc
cess that has attended our enterprise in
thai direction. We are in daily receipt of
letters expressing the thanks of those who,
through the medium of the ''Personals" in
The New?, have been enabled lo receive
tidmss from their friends and relatives in
the South, and the heart of many an exiie
and wanderer has been gladdened through
ihal instrumentality by words of affection
and hope trom those mourned for as dead.
The New York"-News has become so
popular in the rural districts that other lAe
irepolitan journals, in publishing their
stereotyped boat of "the largest circula
tion of any weekly journal7' are constrain
ed lo make an exception in our favor It
if a significant circumstance that since the
Presidential election and consequent de
mie of War Democracy, the ubscriptions
to this paper have been unusually numer
ous. The Agricoltura1 Department of The
New York New renders it an invaluable
companion and assistant to the farmer-;
and its Cattle, Market and Produce Re
ports are more reliable and full than those
of ar.y other journal.
