STAR OF THE NORTH 221 O J2 S II U li 3 T A . Wednesday Jlornin?, 3ay 2Stfi. 186J. Pkof. McCot lectured to a large audi-ru e in thi place on Saturday evening last. The Danville papers announce the death of a youn vo'nu-eer, ry the name ot VVm. 11. Snyder, of that place, who was killed in the la'.e engagement of . V illiamsburg, and who was a rr.e.nber of Company H., 93J Reg't. Penn'a Volunteer. This Com pany went from Danville, under Captain Josifh lUilSKV. The Republican progamrne is to nomi nate !h present incumbent, Thos. E Coch ran, for Auditor General, John Rowe, for Surveyor General, and to change the name of their party to ' People's party." Coch ran is absolutely the most stupid official in the State. This would make a very desira ble ticket for the Democratic party to beat. A Dfmocbat named Thomas Donaldson, residing in Kittanning, Pa , is the owner ot fix bouses, occupied by families of soldiers in the war. For sornn time past he has collected no rent from hi. teuauts. and in tends to permit them 10 remain until the war is over ami yet Mr. Donaldson is a Democrat who vo ed for Breckintidge ! We should like to have an Abolitionist pointed out capable of such patriotism. We have Republican patriots in this county who trurn oldieir families out of their houses I Tub proceedings ol the agricultural meet ing, which was held in this place on last Saturday a Meek, for the purpose of elect ing officers to serve the ensuing year, wil! le seen in the columns of to day's Star It will be seen that the old officers were all (or nearly so, if we remember them,) re elected, and with tcarcely an exception, all Republicaas; and chiefly trom 131 oom town ship Out of eleven officers el-'C'eJ at this meeting fv of them are selected from Bloom township. Bloom's ahead as far as beard from! We wi l uot pretend to say Jiow long it will remain so. Lecttre. The" meeting was organized, on Saturday evening last, in the Court-house this place, by appomting Dr. J Ramsct, President, and John Conner, J-hn Smith Andrew Croupe, William Snyder and Neal McCoy, V ce Presidents. Alter these gentlemen had liken their seats the following persons were appointed by he Chair a Committee to invite the speaker present : Robert F. Clark, Andrew J. Sloan, and Johu Sialey. A few moments elap.-ed, and the speaker came in. accompanied by the Committee ol Invitation, when he was introduced to ihe andience. by the President, as Phofcs son McCot, who wou'd jjeliver an address to them The s-peaker commenced his eloquent ad dress by giving the subject "London Timet on the Rebellion and the war against tl e Constitution," and making some lew pre liminary remarks. He held the audieuee well for oer three hours, and appeared if le could have talked much longer. He is a good elocutionist, and is master of his rolj'ct Momocr Cocnit. We frul 0 e follnwirg in the Cr urt proceedings of Mootonr coun ty, as published in the Dantil'e Democrat: Com. vs. Eliza Arwine, Indictment lor a-sautt and battery. The Grand Jury ignor the bill; Eliza Arwine pay the cosis. Corn vs. Eliza Arwine, Surety of the Peace, botind over to keep !he peace Com. vs. Vincent Arwine,' Indictment for ass&uii ait J battery. Vincent Arwine, for assault and battery. Defendant plead guilty. - This explains "the fight" that the Brig- dier Gtneral should have engaged in some time ago. according to the Republican's state inent end in which, it was reported, be came out "fictorioas." It would appear Iron, the above ' that the General has had several ''engagements," or if but one it hs been a mighty big one of several day's dura lion. VVe presume the General is determin ed to distinguish himself daring this Tar in soma-way, if not with the rtoord with his Jists. and in such a manner as would do credit to John C. Ilenan, the Benicia Boy. In to dat' Star it will be seen that Gen Barks' army has lately met with rather a fevere reerse, having been obliged to re treat across the Potomac ;no Maryland This is almost startling, but nevertheless correct." Last year '.his time, ibis reverse would have created very little censation, but happening now, when McClelfan's army probably needs the assistance of Banks, in attacking the Rebels at Richmond, makes it doubly exciting. Gen. Mc Do well's forces lay at Fredericks burg, ea route for the engagement at Rich mond, should one take place. It is rumor ed in the papers, pretty generally, that the Rebels are leaving Richmond, going farther Sooth- This, most likely, is the case. We never believed a battle would be fought at Richmond. The Rebels failed to fight Mc Clellan this side, which is pretty good evi dence they don't intend to engage him at that place or vicinity. The fact that Banks' tr&ops meeting with this reverse shows that Ihe Rebels are not gathering in at Richmond, bat coming North rather for the purpose of assnming the of fensive. At least this is the way we would view the matter as it stands at present. Tha "Iron Guards", from what we can learn, are with MdJpweU's army, at Fied ericksbarg. The "HurTey Guards" were, a few days ago, at Front Royal, en route for McDowell, but we are inclined to the belief that they were among those of Banks' forces that were driven back. We have not yet the full particulars of thi3 fiht and re'.reat consequently we are unable to state the J. fTe reti I resiments in the engagement , .": : AT . :. " .'
