    STAR OF THE NORTH.
BLOOMS BURG, PA.
Wednesday Morning, Mar 15, 1861.
The Iron Guards attended Church on last
'Sabbath in Harrisburg, also made a street
'parade.
'Attention is directed to Miller & Eter's
advertisement of new ;gboi;, which they
-have just brought to this market.
Tub Po-t Office :at this place was re
'moved last week by P. John to the Book
:Store, in the Exchange Block.

Mrs. Zuppikcer, of this place, is most an
'excellent hand at carpet weaving. Those
having- any'thing to do in that line we can
'recommend them to her.
Lieut. Col. Ent left this place on Mon
'day last for Camp Cunin where he designs
meeting the Iron Guards of which be is a
member.
John K. Gihto, of the Bloomsburg hat
and cap store, sells coffee, brown and white
sugar cheaper than can be had elsewhere
in this place.
The New Liepot, which is being built
tipon the Lackawanna & Bloomsburg Rail
road at this place, is very nearly completed.
It is a

During Court at this place last week on
motion of W. Wirt, Esqr, Mr. P. S j1i-ishel
was admitted to practice as an Attorney in
the several Courts of Columbia county.
Thus one more jong lawyer has been ad
ded to the bar ol Columbia.
Dr.Robt. S. Siminqton, of Danville, has
Veen appointed lt. Surgeon of the 14th
Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers.
He ranks as Major, and receives a monthly
pay of $150.
As tet there has been no Proclamation
issued by the Governor calling upon the
people of this Congressional District to hold
an election to fill the vacancy caused by
the deaih of George XV. Scranion. We will
have a word to say in our next in relation
to the member to be chosen.
Those of our citizens who accompanied
the Iron Guards to Camp Curtin on last
Tuesday, as well as the Bloomsburg Cornet
Band, returned on Saturday evening last,
"with the capture of Jeff Davis, who they
had in the pulhys, hung by the neck. They
'caused quite an excitement with their nov
el performance. People came running
Irom all directions to get a glimpse of the
old traitor in effigy.
We dislike the piety of such people who
i.i the solemn ritual of the Holy SacTament
can one day pretend to show forth that they
would have "Peace on Earth, Good will to
all men,'' and the rext hope that their
neighbors property may be destroyed, their
'tory presses gutted," &c, tkc. If the shoe
doesn't fit some of our loud praying chaps
-about this place, don't put it on.
Peterson's Magazine for June has thus
-early reached our sanctum. It is a beauti
ful number, surpassing all Magazine we
have yet seen for this month. Its pattern
for tidy is toaotifuL, and the embellishments
generally are most tastefully gotten up. La
dies, send and get it. Published at Phila
delphia ; 2 00 per annum. Cheaper
than muny others.
Is consequence of so much rain of late
out farmers will be somewhat belated in
planting their corn. They can not even get
the gro'ind ready, say nothing about plant
ing. We have had too mneh cold and wet
weather heretofore to allow our farmers to
put Beed into the ground when a day or
two did appear favorable. Any time in
this month will do for corn this year, only
plant p'enty of it as we may need more
than you're able to raiss. These are war
times, hence we need good crops.
The Stat Law, or bill to prevent the sac
rifice of property by forced sales in collec
tion of debts, passed the Honse finally on
Tuesday of last week, and passed the Sen
ate on Thursday of same week, with vari
ous amendments, in some of which the
House rather refused to concur. A bill
passed both Houses to provide stationery,
postage stamps, &c, for the soldiers of this
rtate dralted into service of the United
States! This is a fine pop for the boys who
have left "sweet briers" behind.
la this place as well as many others the
people are on a qui-vive to learn where and
when the first battle will be fought. They are
alto anxious to know the movements of the
troops generally. They are pretty com
pletely kept in the fog in these matters, and
It is no doubt very galling to the "known
tmes" veho pride themselves on being
"posted." All kinds of surmise and specn
lition are daily heard in relation to the
probable result of this war. The people
ere getting tired of waiting they want to
ee the whole difficulty speedily adjusted.
Mint PRCFE.SSIONS ware represented m
the Volunteer Company which left this
place last Tuesday for Camp Curtin. The
"art preservative of all arts,'? was not light
ly represented. As near as we could ascer
tain the complexion of the company, there
vr ere Jour printers; two lawyers and one
law-stodant; two" physicians ; three teachers,
and a member of nearly every other pro
fession tr trade yoa could think ol ; all
stont and hardy, able fo succeed in most
any undertaking. With them they have
for their Captain "as brave a lad as ever
trained" or drew a sword, and should they
be brought into actual service we have the
best assurance they will recder an account
worthy of. a most prominent place ia the
history o: our country.
