Mechanics' Cki.kimation—Our readers
are pretty generally aware that Espytown
is an enterprising place and its cirizens are
well versed in the matter of getting up de
monstrations. But it does appear that there
is a certain class of people in that place
and vicinity who do not feel satisfied, and
that class is the Mechanics. They argue
that the Farmers have enjoyed Uvo Harvest
Home Celebrations, which have been lib
erally supported by the mechanics, and
now, why not have a Mechanics' Celebra
tion. Certainly no class of men have done
more for our country than the hard working
mechanic—to them much credit is due for
the building up of our glorious institutions
of Mechanicistn. They are the bone and
sinew of the country. Without !hem every
thing is hushed up—all is at a stand still.
Espytown is nearly central between the
business points of this county. The citi
zens of Espy design giving a Mechanics'
Celebration on Saturday, the 10th of Sep
tember, and a cordial invitation lo all me
chanics throughout the county is extended,
it is hoped the mechanics will all feel an
interest in the matter and take an active
part, that a demonstration may be had of
which tliey may be proud. Good addresses
will be secured.
Tub Executive Committee of the Colum
bia County Agricultural, Horticultural and
Mechanical Association held a meeting on
the 13th iiist., in this place, as we noticed
in our last, and decided a matter of consid
erable interest to the Society, which was,
not to advertise the Premium List in the
papers of the county, but to circulate the
same by hand bill, and thus save a few dol
lars for the Society.
We understand it to be a fixed fact, that
the advertising in relation to the next Fair
will be done by hand-bill. The bills are
i.ot expee'ed to cost near the amount of
advertising in the papers. The only point
in this matter is, we think, will the premi
um list receive the same circulation by
hand-bill it would by newspaper. If not,
it would be belter for the future prosperity ol
the Society to advertise in the papers. This
remains to be seen.
THE Lot -tail organ of this county is in a
sort of dilemma judging from its tone and
whim&icainess on last Saturday. This is
rather an uncommon tiling for an expounder
of Democratic principles and measures
But, taking eve rything into consideration, as
we understand matters, it is no wonder,'
that the sagacious editor of the Democrat is
in trouble. He must certainly hate him
self. He has done so much for the party,
given men offices, and made men President
at so many gatherings, and not yet been re
warded or even honored lor so doing. This
is entirely wrong. It is no wonder that he
should feel sore, and so much out of humor
Please attend to this man's wants, he is so
dererving— in a horn. People throughout
the County owe him a debt.
JOHN FLETCHER, colored man, was lodged
in jail, on last Monday, for stealing goods
from the 6tore of Bowman & Freas, of Ber
wick. Fletcher, it appears, had bee.t quite
an extensive thief. He entered the store at
night times by trap-door on the roof. He
acknowledged that he had beer, practising
these thefts upon this firm lor more than a
year, and had supplied his friends with
goods, as appears by testimony ofTered be
fore the Esquire.
THE TWO Camp meetings,—the one near
Cattawissa and the other six miles from this
place, in CREVELING'S woods, —have closed,
we are informed, with tolerable good suc
cess. They were largely attended by peo
ple from abroad as well as those of the
IMigborhood.

HUMPHREYS' SPECIFIC
.11091 <EOP ATHIC REMEDIES
NO. 562. BROADWA Y.
THE WKEAT FEATURE
Of this series o{ Domestic Remedies is that
each pellicular medicine is a Specific for the
particular disease orclassof iliseases whose
name it bears, and may be relied upnn for
the cure of that particular affection. Hence,
persons suffering from a chronic disease or
long standing ailment, in buying a case of
Humphreys' Specifics, obtain the particular
one desired in their case, and thus them
selves make a cure which otherwise would
cost them many dollars, and no small a
mount of lime and medical attendance, if,
indeed, it could be obtained at all.
Thus multitudes suffer Irom Dispepsia,
BiHious, Cosnveness, Bad Taste, Coated
Tongue, and Debility, which is perfectly
controlled and cured by the
DYSPEPSIA SPECIFIC.
There is scarcely a phase or form of this
disease which is not promptly co itrolled and
ultimately cured by the use ol this Specific.
Thousands who have suffered for years with
this-'Billions Condition" having purchased
a case of ihese Specifics have ootained a
perfect cure and immunity hom their old
complaial.
COUGHS, COLDS, AND SORE THROAT
wliiah so frequeuly lead to
BRONCHI ITS AND CONSUMPTION,
are all in their early stage cured by the
COUGH PILLS.
Many cases of long standing Bronchitis and
irritating Coughs have been perlectly cured
by this Specific. But more ! many persons
have a specific liability to colds and take
ihein from the least .exposure. This will be
entiiely relieved by the use of the Cough
Pills, as semes can testify from experience :
So CATARRH ia one of our most common
and most troublesome diseases, against which
the Old School Medicines and even Ho
iiiuriipalhic prescriptions, are of little use.—
Yet hundreds cf persons have been cured of
not only recent and fresh, but even long
standing and obstinate cases of Catarrh by
the use of this Specific.
One aged lady in Syracuse was thus per
fectly cured of a Catarrh, which had anuyed
her all her life. Anil a young la.ly al one ol
our first class boarding schools, who was so
afflicted w'lh this disease us to require more
than forty handkerchiefs a week, was en
tirely cured in a single week by this Speci
fic. PILES,
bleeding and blind, is one of those common
and obstinate forms of disease which are
so difficult to cure by the ordinary methods,
but which find an entire fundamental cure
in the Piles Specific. True, time is requir.
Ed ; but the Specific is pleasanl lo lake, re
quires neither diet nor restraint, and being
lollowed up a perfect cure is the result.—
Hundreds of persons, in purchasing a cure
ol Specifics, have nbtiiued a cure for this
most trying and obstinate form of disease,
which has been worth lo them ten limes the
cost of the entire set.
The case contains the best
FEVER AND AGUE SPECIEIC
known. A remedy without any delerious
or poisonous substance, which not only
cures the ague, and old, mismanaged agues,
but may be relied upon as a preventive when
persons are residing in a fsver and ague
district. It prevents or protects upon the
same principle that vaccination prevents
small pox or belladonno prevents scarlet fe
fever, by pre-oci-upying the system with the
true specific. Hundreds have been Utus
protracted and cured.
THE OPHTHALMY SPECIFIC
has proved a most valuable rerndy lor Sore
E)es and Kteiids, and for Weak and Blur
red Sight. One lady in Indians, who had
been a sufferer from sore eyes for many
years, and for two years was entirely blind,
was cured perlectly by the Ophthalmy Spe
cific alone.
HEADACHES
to which so many are subject, find a cura
tive in the case. There is a specific which
relieves at the time ol the attack, and also
one which corrects the condition ol the sys
tem upon which it depends, and destroys
the disposition to a return.
The Specifics for the various forms of
FEMALE COMPLINTS
have proved invaluable. Old Standing Le
ucorrltica or Whites, attended with debility
of exhaustion, and for which other forms ol
medicine are ol little value, are fully con
trolled and cured by the Female Pills; while
the specific fur Irregularities control almost
every form of Scanty, Painful or Irregular
Menstruation.
DIARRHCEAS & SUMMER COMPLINTS
in adults or children are controlled like ma
gic by the Diarrhcea Pills, whiie it may be
averted without the possibility ol successful
contradiction that ttie Dysentery Pills are the
most perfect specific for that disease known.
For the various forms of
FEVERS, SCARLET FEVER, MEASLES,
ami other diseases of children, the Fever
Pills may be salely and surely relied upon.
These Specifics of Prof. Humphreys, used
for years in his.extensive practice, and to the
perlection of which he has devotee the re
sources ot extensive knowledge, experience
and study.
The public may rest assured that during
the lifetime of Dr. H., no one has been or
shall be trusted with the preparation of his
Specifics, and he offers the guaranty of his
professional life ai d reputations that they
shall be just as he represents them.
They have now been before the pub
lic for five years, and have everywtiere
won goluen opinions from the many thou
sands who have used them. •
Simple, free from intricacy, technicalily,
or dangur, they have become it.e ready re
course and aid of the parent, traveler, nurse,
or invalid, and have become the family
physician and medical adviser of thousands
ol families. Nowhere have they be n tried
without having been approved, and their
highest appreciation is among those who
have known them the longest, and most in
timately.
Every Family will find these Specifics all
they have been recommended ; Promt Re
liable, Simple and Efficient; a Friend (in
need and often a Friend indeed.

Scroftila, or King's Evil,
is a constitutional disease, a corruption of the
blood, by which this fluid becomes vitiated,
weak, and poor. Being in the circulation, it
pervades the whole body, and may burst out
in disease on any part of it. No organ is free
from its attacks, nor is there one which it may
not destroy. The scrofulous taint is variously
caused by mercurial disease, low living, dis
ordered or unhealthy food, impuro air, filth
and filthy habits, the depressing vices, and,
above all, by tho venereal infection. What
ever be its origin, it is hereditary in tho con
stitution, descending " from parents to children
unto the third and fmirtVaeusration j" indeed,
it secma to bo the rod-vfJillm who says, "I
will visit tho iniquities of tho fathers upon
their children."
Its effects commence by deposition from the
blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in
the lungs, liver, and internal organs, is termed
tubercles; in the glands, swellings; and on
the surface, eruptions or sores. This foul cor
ruption, which genders in the blood, depresses
the energies of life, so that scrofulous constitu
tions not only suffer from scrofulous com
plaints, but they have far less power to with
stand the attacks of other diseases; conse
quently, vast numbers perish by disorders
which, although not scrofulous in their nature,
are still rendered fatal by this taint in the
system. Most of the consumption which de
cimates the human family has its origin directly
in this scrofulous contamination; and many
destructive diseases of the liver, kidneys, brain,
and, indeed, of all the organs, arise from or
are aggravated by the same cause.
Ono quarter of all our people are scrofiilous;
their persons are invaded by this lurking in
fection, and their health is undermined by it.
To cleanse it from tho system we must renovate
tho blood by an alterative medicine, and in
vigorate it by healthy food and exercise.
Such a medicine we supply in
AYER'S
Compound Extract of SarsapariUa,
the most effectual remedy which the medical
skill of our times can devise for this every
where prevailing and fatal malady. It is com
bined from tho most active remcdials that have
been discovered for tho expurgation of this foul
disorder from the hlood, and the rescue of the
SBtem from its destructive consequences,
ence it should be employed for tho cure of
not only scrofula, but also those other affec
tions which arise from it, such as EBOPTIVE
and SKIN DISEASES, ST. ANTHONY'S FIBB,
ROBE, or EHYSII'ELAS, PIMPLES, PUSTULES,
BLOTCHES, BLAINS and BOILS, TUMOBS, TETTEB.
and SALT RUEUM, SCALD HEAD, RINGWORM,
RHBUUATISM, SYPHILITIC and MEBCUBIAL DIS
EASES, DROPSY, DYSPEPSIA, DEBILITY, and,
indeed, ALL COMPLAINTS ARISING FROM VITIA
TED OR IMPURE BLOOD. The popular belief
in " impurity of the blood" is founded in truth,
for scrofula is a degeneration of the blood. Tho
particular purpose and virtuo of this Sarsapa
riUa is to purify and regepfMte this vital fluid,
without which sound heaxCn Ls impossible in
contaminated constitutions.
Ayer's Cathartic Pills,
FOR ALL THE PURPOSES OF A FAMILY PHYSIC,
are so composed that disease within the range of
their action can rarely withstand or evade them
Their penetrating properties scorch, and cleanse,
and invigorate every portion of the human organ
ism, correcting its diseased action, and restoring
its healthy vitalities. As a consequence of theso
properties, tho invalid who is bowed down with
pain or physical debility Is astonished to find his
health or energy restored by a remedy at once so
simple and inviung.
Not only do they cure the cvery-day complaints
of every body, but also many formidable and
dangerous diseases. The agent below named is
pleased to furnish gratis my American Almanac,
containing certificates of their cures and directions
for their use in the fallowing complaints: Coative
ness, Heartburn, Headache arising from disordered
Stomach, Nausea, Indigestion, Pain in and Morbid
Inaction of the Bowels, Flatulency, Loss of Appe
tite, Jaundice, and other kindred complaints,
arising from a low state of the body or obstruction
of its functions.
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral,
FOR TUB RAPID CURE OF
Coughs, Colds, Influenza, Hoarseness,
Croup, Bronchitis, Incipient Consump
tion, and for the relief of Consumptive
Patients in advanced stages of the
disease*
So wide is the field of its usefulness and so nu
merous are the cases of its cures, that almost
every section of country abounds in persons pub
licly known, who have been restored from alarming
and even desperate diseases of the lungs by its
use. When once tried, its superiority over every
other medicine of its kind is too apparent to escape
observation, and where its virtues are known, the
public no longer hesitate what antidote to enuploy
for the distressing and dangerous affections of the
pulmonary organs that are incident to our climate.
While many inferior remedies thrust upon the
community have failed and been discarded, this
has gained friends by every trial, conferred benefits
on the afflicted they con never forget, and pro
duced cures too numerous and too remarkable to
be forgotten.

I A MEDICAL REVOLUTION !
The World Unanimous;
HOLLOW AY S 01N TME NT.
THE GREAT COUNTER IRRITANT! !
The virus of disease often makes its way
In the internal organs through the pores of
the skin. Tins penetrating Ointment, melt
ing under the hand as it is nibbed in, is ab
sorbed through tho same channels, and,
reaching the seal of inflatnation, promptly
and invariably subdues it, ivhe Iter located
in the kii'nevs the liver, the longs, or arty
other important organ. It penetrates the
surface to the interior, through the countless
tubes that communicate with the skin, as
summer rain passes into the fevered esrth,
diffusing its cool and regenerating influence.
SKIN DISEASES AND GLANDULAR
SWELLINGS.
Every species of exterior irritation is
quickly reduced by the ami inflammatory
action of this Ointment. Angry Eiuptions,

under this application. Hospital experi
ence in all parts of the World proves its
infallibility in diseases of the skin, the mus
cles, the joints and the glands.
ULCERS, SORES, AND TUMORS.
The effect of this unrivalled external
remedy upon Scrofula, and other virulent
ulcers and sores, almost moraculous. It
first discharges the poison which produces
suppuration and proud flesh, and thus the
cures which its healing properties afterwards
complete are safe as well as permanent.
WOUNDS, BRUISES, BURNS, AND
SCALDS.
In eases of the fracture of the bones, in
juries caused hy steam explosions, Bruises,
Burns, Scalds, Rheumatism, Stiffness of tho
Joints, and contraction of the sinews, it is
employed ami warmly recommended by
the faculty. This marvellous remedy has
