WAHINCTON, Oct. 9 —The President re
ceived n telegraphic despatch from John
Bulterfield, President of the Overland Mail
Company, dated St, Louis, October olh, in
forming him that the great overland mail ar
rived there to day from San Francisco, in
twenty threedaysand lourhours. The stage
brought through six passengers.
The President replied by telegraph as fol
lows :

It is a glorious triumph for civilization and
