PURE
OS7TEOO STARCH*
(FOR THE LAUNDRY.)
TTAS established a greater celebrity than
*■" has ever been obtained by any othet
Starch.
This has been the result of its marked su
periority in quality, and its invariable uni
formity.
The public may be assured of Ihe conlinu- 1
ance of the h gh standard now established.
The production is over Twenty Tons daily,.
and the demand has extended throughout the |
whole of the United States, and to foreign [
countries.
Working thus on a very large scale, and j
under a rigid system, they are aide to spcurtt '
a perfect nttd uniformity in tlte quality in rough- j
out the year. This is the great Desideratum j
in Starch making, and is realized now for j
Ihe first time.
The very beet etareli Ihat cnn be made, end |
no other, is always wat led by consumers, !
had white this will be supplied to them bj j
the grocers, as soon as their customers have )
learned which is the best, and ask for it— I
otherwise they would be likely to get that
article on which the largest profit can be
made.
Mr. Kingsford hastbeen engaged in the
manufacture of starch continuously for the
last 27 years, and during Ihe whole of the
period, the stHrcli made under Ins supervis
ion has been, beyond any question, the best
in the market. For the first 17 years, he hud
Ihe charge of the works ol Win. Colgate &
Co.. at which period he invented the proce.-s
of the manufacture of corn starch.
T3T Ask for Kingston!' s Starch, as the name
Oswego has recently been taken by another fac
tory.
T. KINGSFORD & SON'S
OSWEGO CORN STAIWH,
(For Puddings, Ifc,)
Has obtained an equal celebrity with theif
Starch for the Laundry. This article is per'
fectly pure, and is, in every respect, equal to
the best Bermuda Arrow-Root, besides hav
ing additional qualities which render it inval
uable for the dessert.
Potato Starch lias been extensively packed
and sold as Corn Slaroh, and lias given false
impressions to many, as to the real merits ol
our Com Starch.
From its great delicacy and purity, it is
coming aRo into extensive use as a tiiet lor
infants and invalids.

CONSUMPTION.
AND ALL JISEASES OF THE LUNGS
And THOATT ate positively curable by in
halation, which conveys Ihd. remedies to
the cavities ill the lungs through the air pas
sages, and coming in direct contact with the
disease, neutralizes the tubercular matter,
allays the cough causes a free and easy ex-
I pecto'siion, heals the lungs, pur lies the blood,
imparts renewed vitality to the nervous sys-
letn, giving that lone and energy so ittdis
ppiisable for the restoration of healih. To he
able to slate confidently that Consumption is
curanle by inhalation, is to me a source of
! unalloyed pleasure. It is a- much under the
control of medical treatment as any ther
formidable disease; ninety nut of every hun
dred rases can be cured in the first stages,
and filtv per cent, in the second; but ill the
third stage it is impossible lo save more than
five per cent., for ihe lungs are so cut up by
llie disease as to bid defiance lo medical
I skill. Even, however, in the last stages, in
I halation affords extraordinary rehel to the
j suffering intending this tearful scourge, which
| niiiiuolly destroys ninety five thousand per
i sons ill the United States alone; and a correct
! calculation show s lhat out of the present pop
i illation of the eatth, eighty miliums are de
| tiiiecl lo fill the consumptive's grave.
• Truly the quiver of death lias no arrow so
fatal as Consumption. In all ages it has been
j the great enemy of life, for it spares neithor
■ age nor sex, but sweeps off alike the brave,
i the beautiful, the graceful, and the gifted.—
j By tlte help of that Supreme Being, from
i whom cometh every gond and perfect gift, I
! urn enabled to offer to the afflcted a perma-
I nent aril speedy cure in Consumption. Tlte
■ first cause ol tubercles is from impure
. blood, ullit Ihe immediate effect, produced
1 by their deposition in Ihe lungs, is to prevent
' the free admission of air into the air cells,
■ which causes a weakened vitality through
i the entire system. Then surely it is more
' rational to expect greater good from tv.edij
| cities entering the cavities of the lungs than
| from those administered through the stotn-
I ach; the patient wilt always find the lungs
(roe anil the breathing easy alter inhaling
remedies. Thus, inhalation is a local
remedy, nevertheless it-acts constitutionally,
and with more power and certainty than rem
edies administered by the etonnach. To prove
the nowcrlnl and direct influence ol litis
mods of administration, chloroform inhaled
will entirely destroy sensibility in a lew rniti
tt'es, paralyzing lite enure nervous system, so
tha' a limb may be amputated without lite
s'ighiest pain; inhaling the ordinary burning I
gas vvdl destioy lite hi a few hours.
The inhalation of ammonia will rnnoe the
system when fainting or apparently dead.—
Tho odor ol many of lite medicines is per
ceptible in the skin a few minute- af.er being
inhaled, and may be immediately detected
in iho blood A convincing proof of the
constitutional effects ol inhalation, is Ihe fact
that sickness is always produced by breath
ing foul air. Is not this positive evidence
that proper remedies, carefully prepared and
judiciously administered thiough the longs,
should produce thewnost happy resulls? Du
ring eighteen years' practice, mativ thous
ands; suffering fro.n diseases of the lungs
and throat, hive been under my care, and 1
have affected many remarkable cures, even
alter the sufferers had been pronounced itt
iho last stages, which fully satisfies me that
consumption is no longer o latal disease.—
My treatment of consumption is original, and
founded oil long experience and a thorough
investigation. My perfect acquaintance with
the nature of tubercles, &0., enables me to j
distinguish readily the various forms of dis- j
ease that simulate consumption, anil apply j
ihe proper remedies rarely being misiaken j
even m a single case. Tiiis familiarity in
connection with certain pathological am l mi
cioscopic discoveries, enables me to reiievq,
the lung" from tlte effects of contracted chests;
to enlarge Ihe chest, pnrlty-'he blood, imparl
to it renewed vitality, giving enurgy and tone
to the entire system.
Medicines with full directions sent lo any
part oi the United States and Canada* by
patients communicating their symptoms by
letter. But Ihe cure would be more ceilain
if the patient should pay me a visit, which
would give mo an opportunity to examine
tlte lungs and enable me to prescribe with
greater certainty, and then the cure could be
effected without my seeing the paiigm again.

TRUTH IS MIGHTY, If MUST PREVAIL.
Report of the Committee appointed to
superintend the burning' of the Iron
Safes at Heading, Feb. 27th, 1857.
READING, March 4th.
The undersigned, members of the Commit
tee, do respectfully report, that we saw the
two Safes originally agreed epon by Farrels
& Herrina and Evans & Watson, placed side
by side in a furnace, viz: The Sale in nse by
the Paymaster of the Philadelphia and Read
ing Railroad Company, in his office at Read
ing, manufactured by Farrels & Herring, and
the Safe in use by H. A. Lain/., in his store,
manufactured by Evans & Watson, and put
in books and papers precisely alike.
The fire was started at 8i o'clock, A. M.,
and kept up until lour cords of green hickory,
two cords dry oaleand lull chestnut top wood
were entirely consumed, the whole under
the superintendence of the subscribers, mem
bers ol the Committee. The Safes were then
cooled ofl with water, after which they were
opened, agd the books and papers taken out
by the Committee and sent to H. A. Cadiz's
store for public examination, after they were
first examined and marked by the Commit
tee, The books and papers taken from the
Safe manufactured by Evans & Watson were
but slightly affected by the intense heat,
while those taken from the Safe manufac
tured by Farrels & Herring were, in our judg
ntent, damaged fully fifteen per cent, more
than those taken from Evans & Watson's
Safe.
JACOB H. DYSHF.R,
DANIER S. HUNTER.
Having been absent during the burning,
we fully coincide with the above statement
of the condition of tho pnpers and books tak
en out of tho respective Safes.

Extract from the Committee's Report on )
the Trial of Iron Safes at Reading:
"On the 26th of February all the members
of the Committee met to witness the Safes
and books and papers, (placed in them) and
were perfectly satisfied that all was right.—
The day following, the burning took place,
under the superintendence of the Committee.
After a fair and impartial burning for fivo
hours, the Safe of Messrs. Evans & Watson
was first opened, the Sale being on fire in
side, and the contents partially consumed,
while the contents in the Safe of Messrs.
Farrels '& Herring were in good condition,
and no fire inside."

LOTTERIES.
THE well-known Maryland Consolidated
Lotteries, of which R. FRANCE & Co. are
the managers, are chartered by the state of
Maryland, and a commissioner elected by
the people, who is sworn to superintend and
certify that everything connected with them
is done in a strictly honorable manner, and
that the interists of parlies who reside at a
distance are as well protected as if they
themselves were present at the drawing.—
Another fact which the managers coll atten
tion to, is, that all persons have a legs! right
to send orders for tickets to Maryland, as
lotteries are legalized by special law in that
state. A lottery is drawn every day of the
mouth. If no particular class is named, or
ders are filled in the first drawing to lake
place after the communication comes to
hand. The prices of tickets vary from SI
to 820. No tioketsare, however, sent unless
th e money lor the same is received with the
order. The drawings are upon the principle
of one number on each ticket (after the Ha
vana plan,) and Ternary combination. Prizes
vary in amount from 120 to 8100,000. All
orders for tickets or packages will receive
prompt attention, and the drawing mailed to
all purchasers immediately atlpr it is over.
