Report of the Committee appointed to superintend the burning of the Iron Safe* at Reading, Feb. 27th, 1867. Heading, March 4th. The undtirtfgnftd, members of the Commit-' tee, do respectfully report, thai we saw the two Safes originally agreed epoa by Parrel# & Herring and Evans & Watson, placed tide by sale in a furnace, via: The Sale in oae by the Paymaster of the Philadelphia and Read ing Railroad Company, in hit office al Head ing, manufactured by Farrels & Herring, and the Safe in use by H. A. I-anti, in bis slow, manufactured by Evans & Wataon, and put in books and papers precisely alike. The fire was started al 84 o'clock, A. M., and kept up until four cords of green hickory, two cords dry oak and half chestnut top wood were entirely consumed, the whole under the superintendence of the subscribers, mem bers ol the Committee. The Safes were then , cooled off wiih water, after which they were opened, agd the books and papers taken oat by the Committee and sect to H. A. Larttz's store for public examination, after they were first examined and marked by the Commit tee. The books and papers taken from the Safe manufactured by Evans & Watson were but slightly affected by the intense heal, while those taken from the Sale mannfac lured by Farrels A Herring were, in our judg ment, damaged fully fifMM per oeni. mm* than those taken from Jpiana & Watson s Safe.
