ANOTHER SCIENTIFIC WONDER | IP IS BP S3 31 ST 8 THE TRUE DIGESTIVE FLUID, OR A Great Dyspepsia eurer, Prepared from RENNET, or tne fourth Stomach of the Ox, after .irections of Baron I.iebig, the great Physiological Chemist, by J. S. Houghton, M. IE, No.ll, North Eighth Street, "Phila delpliia( Pa. This is n tiuly wonderful remedy for Indi gestion, D\s;.ppsia, Jaudiee, Liver Com plaint, Com ipntlon, and Debility, Curing i f "r Nature's own method, by Nature's own ngent, the Gastric Juiec. W Half a spoonful of this Fluid, infused in water, will digest or dissolve, Five Pounds of Roast Reef in about two hours, out of the stomach. DIGESTION, Digestion is Chielly performed in the stomach by the aid of a liuid which freely exudes from the inner coat of that organ, when in a slate ol health, called the Gastric Juice. This fluid isthe Great solvent of the Food, the Purifying, Preserving, and Stimula ting Agent of the stomach atul intenstines. Without it there will be no digestion,—no conversion of food into blood, and no nu trition of the body; but rather a foul, torpid, painfil, and destructive, condition of the whole digestive apparatus. A weak, half dead, or injured stomach produces no good Gastric Juice, and hence the disease, dis tress and debility which ensue. PEPSIN AKD RENNET. —Pepsin is tho chiel clement, or great Digesting Principle of the Gastric Juice. It is found in great abun dance in the solid parts of the human stom ach after do tilt, anil sometimes causes the stomach to digest itself, or cot i'self up. It is alto found in the stomach ol animals, as tho o.r, calf, Sic. It is the material used by | farmers in makirg cheese, called Rennet, j the effect of which has long boon the spe cial wonder of the dairy. The curdling of | milk is the first process of digestion, lien- I net possesses astouishi"g power. The stom- | ach of a calf will curdle nearly one thou- j sand times its own weight ol milk. Baron i I.iebig stales that. 'One part of Pepsin dis- | solved in sixty thousand parts of water, will digest meat and other food.'' Diseased stomachs produce no good Gastric Juice Rennet or Pepsin. To show that this want may be perlcctly supplied, wo quote the following SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE! BAUON LIEBIC, in his celebrated work on Animal Chemistry, says: "An Artificial Di gestive Fluid atialagous to the Gastric Juice, may bo readily prepared from the uucous membrane of the stomach of the Call, in which various articles of food, as meal ami eggs" will be softened, changed, and diges ted, just in the same manner as they would bo in die human stomach." Dr. I'ereira, in his famous treatise on •'Food and Diet," published by Fowlers &. 'Wells, New York, page 35. states the same great fact, ami describes the method of prep aration. There aro few higher authorities than Dr. Pcreira. Dr Combe, in _liis valuable writings on the "Physiology ol Digestion," observes I i that "a diminution ol the due quantity of the (lastrie Juice is a prominent ami all pre vailing cause of Dyspepsia;" ami lie states that "a distinguished professor of niedicino in London, who was severely afflicted with this complaint finding every thing else to fail, had recourse to the Gastric Juice, ob tained from the stomach of living animals, which proved completely successful." Dr. Graham, author of the famous works on "Vegetable Diet,"says: "ilia a remar kable fact in physiology .Mint the stomachs of animals, macerated in water, impart to die fluid the properly of dissolving various articles of food, and of effecting a kind of artificial digestion of them in no wise dif ferent from the natural digestive process." Dr. Simon's great work, tlio "Chemistry of Man," (Lea & Blanehard, Phila., 1846. pp. 321-2): "Tho discovery of PEPSIN i'o.ms a new era in die chemical history of Di gostion. From recent experiments we know that food is dissolved as rapidly in an artificial digestive fluid, prepared from Pep sin, as it is in the natural Gastric Juice it self." Professor Dunglison of the Jefferson Col lege, Philadelphia, in his great work on Hu man Physiology, devotes more than fifty pages to an examination of this subject. His experiments with Dr Beaumont, on the Gastric Jniee, obtnined from tho living hu man stomach and from animals aro well known. "In'all cases," he says, "digestion occurred as perfectly in the artificial us the natural digestions." As a DYSPEPSIA CURER, Dr Houghton's preparation of Pepsin has produced the most marvellous effects, curing eases of De bility, Emaciation, Nervous Decline, and dispeptic Consumption, supposed to be on the very verge ol the grave. It is imposs- | ble to give the details of cases in tho limit | of this' nrherti.-cmeiil—but authenticate | certificates have been of more than two hun- t died Remarkable Cures, in Philadelphia, Now i York,' and Boston alone. SICKLY AND UNHAPPY WIVES. Extract of abetter from a Gentleman in Dayton, O. " DAYTON, May 1,1847. "DR. A. M. MAURICIAU— My Dear Sir: 'The Married Woman'. Private Medical Companion,' for which I enclosed one dollar to your address, came safely to hand. I would not have troubled you with these lew linos, hut that I am impelled by a aenso or gratitude, for myaelf and wife, to give utterance to our sincere and heartfelt emotions. " My wife has been perceptibly sinking for some three years or more, in consequence of her great an guish and suffering some months before and during conlinement■, every successive one more snd more debilitated and proatrated her, patting her life in im minent danger, and which was, on the last occasion, despaired of I supposed that this state of things was inevitable, and resigned myself to meet tho worst. At this time (now about two months) 1 heard your book highly spoken of, as containing some matters reaching my oaao. On its receipt and perusal, I can not express to you the relief it afforded my distressed mind snd the Joy ita pages imparted to my wife, on learning that the great discovery of M. M. I)eso menu, provided a remedy. It opened a prospect to me which 1 little conceived was possible. No pecu niary consideration can ever repay the obligation! I am under to you for having been tho means of im parting to us the matters contained in ' The Married Woman's Private Medical Companion.' But for this, ere another year would have passed over my head, in all human probability my wife would have been in her grave. and my children left motherless." Extract from a Letter. Competence and Health. "LANCASTER, PA., Oct 24, 1847. " Mr DEAR SIR : I know you will have the kind ness to bear with me in encroaching upon your time, while I acknowledge (in behalf of myself and wife) the obligations wo feel ourselves under to you in hav ing made known certain matters, contained in jmur most invaluable • Married Woman's Private Medical Companion.' It has been worth its weight in gold to mc. If I express myself rather warmly, you will aee that I can not do so too warmly, when I inform you of the extent to which I have, through it, been benefited. 1 will state my situation when I obtained your book through the merest curiosity I look upon it aa ono of the most fortunate events of my life. I had been married some ten years, and was the father of seven children. I was long straggling unceasingly, to the end that I might gain a moderate competency, but the results of my utmost exertions at the end left me about where I wti at the beginning of each year ; and that only, with the most Hinted economy, suffi cing with barely the necessaries of life. Finally, this constant effort was beginning to have its effect upon my health: I felt less capable to endure its continu ance, while I felt the necessity of perseverance. " This constant, unceasing struggle on my part was imperative, in consequence of the prostrnted condi tion of my wife (with occasional intermission) for six years, much of the time qpnfined to her bed, and of course incapable of taking tho charge and manage ment of household affairs. Her condition arose from causes of which I was ignorant. Oh! what would I have given had I the six years to live over again! Wlut would my wife have given to have been spared the long daya and still longer nights prostrate on a bed of sickness!—all of which wonld have been avoided, had I then seen a copy of ' THE MARRIED WOMAN'S PRIVATE MEDICAL COMPANION.' From a Physician. DANGEROUS DELIVERIES, OBSTRUCTIONS, IRREGULARITIES, &C. How many are ■uffering from obstruction or irreg ularities peculiar to the female system, which un dermine their health, the effects of which they arc ignorant, and for which their delicacy forbids seeking medical advice! How many suffer from prolap*vs uteri (falling of the womb), or from Jluar-albus (weak ness, deflftity, &c., &c)! How many are in constant agony for many months preceding confinement! How many have difficult if not dangerous deliveries, and whose lives are Jeoparded during such time, will find in its pages the means of prevention, amelioration, and relief! Extract Jrom a Letter. Read and be Convinced. The Hon. Charles D. Hineline, Kditor of the "Camden Democrat," the best paper in West Jursey, says, July 21: — "HOOFLAND'S GERMAN BITTERS." —"We have seen many flattering notices of this medicine, and the source from which they came, induced us to make inquiry respect ingits merits. From inquiry we were per suaded to use it, and must say we found it specific in its action upon diseases of the liver and digestive organs, and the powerfut influence it exerts upon nervous prostration is really surprising, ft calms and stregthens the nerves, bringing them into a state of re pose, making Sleep relreshing. [From the "Boston Bee."] The editor said, Dec. 22d— '•l)r. Boojlund's Celebrated German Bitters for the cure of Liver Complaint, Jaundice, Dyspeysia, Chronic or Nervous Debility, is deservedly one of the most popular medi cines of the day. These Bitters have been used by thousands, and a friend ut our elbow says be lias himself received an elfeclual and permanent cure of Liver Complaint from the use of this remedy. We are con vinced that, in the use of these Bitters, the patient constantly gains strength and vigor— a fact worthy of great consideration. They are pleasant in taste and smell, and can be used by persons with the most delicate stoin achs with safety, under any circumstances. We are speaking from experience and to the afflicted we advise their use." Judge M. M. Noah, a gentleman with great scientific and and liuerary attainments, said in his "New York Weekly Messenger," January 6, 1850. "Dr. Hoofland's German Bitters. —Here is a preparation which the loading presses in the Union appear to be unanimous in re commending, and the reason is obvious. It is made after a prescription furnished by one o'. the most celobrated physicians of modern limes, the late Dr Christopher Wil : helin Hoofland, Professor to the University of Jena, Private Physician to the King of Prussia, and one of the greatest medical wri ters Germany has ever produced. He was emphatically the enemy of humbug, and thoiefore a medicino of which ho was the inventor and endorser may be confidently re lied on. He specially recommended it in Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia, Debility, Ver tigo, Acidity of the Stomach, Constipation, and all complaints arising from a disordered condition of the stomach, the liver and the intestines. Nine Philadelphia papers express their conviction of its excellence, and sev eral ot the editors speak of its effects from their own individual experience. Under these circumstances, we (eel warranted, not only in calling the aitentiou of our readers to the present proprietor's (Dr. C. M. Jack son's) preparation, but in recommending the article to all afflicted." MORE EVIDENCE. The "Philadelphia Saturday Gazette," the best family newepapei published m the Uni ted States, the editor says of DR. HOOFLANDS GERMAN BITTERS. "It i 6 seldom that we recommend what are termed Patent Medicines to the confi dence and patronage of our readers; and, therefore, when we recommend Dr. Hoof land's German Bitters, we wish it to be dis tinctly understood that we are not speaking of the nostrums of the day, that are noised about for a brief period and then forgotten after they have done their guilty race of mis chif, but of a medicine long established, universally prized, and which has met the hearty approval of the Faculty itself." Evidence upon evidence has been re ceived (like the foregoing) from all sections ot the Union, the last three years, and the strongest testimony in its favor, is, that there is more of it used in the practice of the regu lor Physicians of Philadelphia than all other nostrums combined, a fact that can easily be established, and fully proving that a sci entific preparation will meet with their qui et approval when" presented even in this form. That this medicine will cure Liver Com plaint and Dyspepsia, no one can doubt, af ter using it as diiected. It acts specifically upon the Btomach and liver—it is ymferablc to calomel in ail bilious diseases — is immediate.
