No. 120 Arch Street, Philadelphia.
Their power over the abovo diseases is
not excelled, if equalled, by any other rep
aration in the United Slates, as ihe cures
attest, in many cases after skilful physicians
had failed.
These Bitters are worthy the attention of
invalids. Possessing great virtues in the
rectification of diseases of tho Liver arid 1 la
ser glands, exercising the most searching
powers iu weakness und adeclionsof the di
gestive organs, they are, withal, 6afe, cer
tain and pleasant.
Read and be Convinced.
The Hon. Charles D. llineline, Editor of
the "Camden Democrat!."the best paper in
West Jersey, says, July 21: —
"HOOFLANB'S GERMAN BITTERS."—"'We
have seen many fluttering notices of this
medicine, and the source from which they
came, induced us to make inquiry respect
ing its merits. From inquiry we were per
suaded to use it. and must say we found
it specific in its action upon diseases of the
liver and digestive organs, and the powerful
influence it exerts upon nervous prostration
is really surprising. It calms and stregthens
the nerves, bringing them into a state of re
pose, making sleep relreshing.
"If this medicine were more generally
_;sed, we are satisfied there would be less
sickness, as from the stomach, liver and ner
vous system the great majority of real and
imaginary diseases emanate. Have them in
a healthy condition, and yon can bid defi
ance to epidemics generally. This extraor
dinary medicine wo would advise eur friends
who are at ail indisposed to give a trial—-it
will then recommend itself. It should, in
fact, be in 'every family. No other medi
cine can produce such evidences of merit."
[From the "Boston Bee."]
The editor said, Dec. 22d—
"Dr. lloojland's Celebrated German Bitters
for the cure of Liver Complaint, Jaundice,
Dyspeysia, Chronic or Nervous Debility, is
deservedlv one of the roost popular medi
cines of the day. These Bitters have been
used by thousands, and a friend at our elbow
says be has himself received an effectual
and permanent cure of Liver Complaint
from the use of this remedy. We arc con
vinced that, in the use of these Bitters, the
patient constantly gains strength and vigor—
a fact worthy of great consideration. They
are pleasant in taste and smell, and can be
used by persons with tho most delicate stom
achs with safety, tinder any circumstances.
We tire speaking from experience and to tho
afflicted we advise their use."
Judge M M. Noah, a gentleman with
great scientific and and litterary attainments,
said in his "New York Weekly Messenger,"
January 6, 1850.
"Dr. Hoojland's German Bitters. —Here is
a preparation which the leading presses in
the Union appear to be unanimous in re
commending, and the reason is obvious. It
is made after a prescription furnished by
one o: the most celebrated physicians of
modern times, the late Dr. Christopher Wil
lielm Hoofland. Professor to the University
of Jena, Private Physician to the King of
Prussia, and one of the greatest medical wri
ters Germany has ever produced. He was
emphatically the enemy of humbug, and
the.elore a medicine of which ho was the
inventor and endorser may be confidently re
lied on. He specially recommeuded it in
Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia, Debility, Ver
tigo, Acidity of the Stomach, Constipation,
and all complaints arising from a disordered
condition of the stomach, the liver and the
intestines. Nine Philadelphia papers express
their conviction of its excellence, and sev
eral ot the editors speak of its effects from
their own individual experience. Under
these circumstances, we feel warranted, not
only in calling the a.tention of our readers
to the present proprietor's (Dr. C. M. Jack
soil's) preparation, but in recommending the
ayiele to all afflicted."
MORE EVIDENCE.
The "Philadelphia Saturday Gazette," the
best family newspapet published in the Uni
ted States, the editor says of
DR. IIOOFLANDS GERMAN BITTERS.
"It is seldom that we recommend what
are termed Patent Medicines to the eonfi
dence and patronage of our readers; and,
therefore, when wo ocommond Dr. lloof
land's German Bines, we wish it to be dis
tinctly understood .cat we are not speaking
of the nostrums of the day, that are noised
about for a brief period and then forgotten
after they have done their guilty race ol mis
chif, but of a medicine long established,
universally prized, and which has met the
hearly approval of tho Faculty itself."
Evidence upon evidence has been re
ceived (like tho foregoing) from all sections
ot the Union, the last three years, and the
strongest testimony in its favor, is, that there is
more of it used in the practice of the regu
lor Physicians of Philadelphia than all oilier
uoslrums combined, a fact that can easily
be established, and fully proving that a sci
entific preparation will meet with their qui
et approval when presented even in this
form.
That this medicine will cure Liver Com
plaint and Dyspepsia, no one can doubt, af
ter using it as diiccted. ft acts specifically
upon the stomach and liver—it is preferable
to calomel in all bilious diseases —the effect is
immediate. They can he administered to
FEMALE or INFANT with safety and reliable
benefit, at any time. *

A WONDERFUL CURE.
Hunterdon County, N.J,
Dr. S. A. Pearson, Dear Sir—About a year a
go I became severely afflicted with a pain in my
breat and side, ail extremely had cough, spittingof
blood, debility, night sweats, and other symptoms
of confirmed consumption. I became so much re
duced that I was unable to attend to my ordinary
business. I made application to a physician, who
examined my chest, and gave it aa his decided o
-1 pinion that my lungs were serious'.y affected. I
then app.ied to another, who was of the same o
j pinion, and after having presctibed advised me to
I return to my friends.
Previous to this I had for 4 long lime been la
boring under all the symptoms usually found with
persons laboring under disease of ihe lurgs, and
it was thought by all who knew me that I was fast
wearing away with decay.
At the timo I applied to the physicians I was
laboring under a severe attack of spitting blood,
with pain in nry breast and side. 1 heir prescrip
tions failed to relieve the pain, and all their skill
could not arrest the discharge of blood frpm my
lungs. This being my condition, I was induced
to make a trial of your valuable Pulmonic Expcc
torant, oy the use or which I was immediately re
lieved of all those unpleasant symptoms, and am
now so far restored to health, that 1 am able to
attend to all my ordinary business, and expose
myself as much as it is prudent for any one to do.
I would therefore confidently recommend every
person who is laboring under disease of the lungs
and breast, or who are afflicted with colds or with
coughs, to mako trial of your most valuable prep
aration- 1 would further add that after having
made use of your Expectorant for a few weeks, 1
becamd -o fle'sy that persons with whom r was
acquainted hardly knew me. 1 still remain in good
health at this time, March, 1846.

Dn. 8. P. Towifsr.no, not having tested bis Sarsa
parilla in case of Fits, of course, never recommended
it and was surprised to receive the following from an
intelligent au<l respoctable Fanner in Westchester
County ;
ForJham, August 13, 1847.
Da. 8. P. TOWNIKNP—Dear Sir: I have a little girl,
seven yeura of age. who has been several years
afflicted with Fits; we tried almost every thing lor
her, but without success ; at last, although we could
find no recommendation in yourcirculars for cosoa like
hers, we thought, as she was in very delicate health,
we would give her some of your Barsaporilla, and art
glad we dm, for it nut only restored her strength, but
■he has liaa no return of the Fits, to our very great
pleasure and surpiise. fche is fast becoming rugged
and healthy for which we feel grateful.

Female Medicines.
Da. 8. P. TOWNSFXD'S Sarsaparilla ia a sovereign
and speedy cure for Incipient Consumption, Barren
ness, Prolapsus Uteri, or Falling of the Womb, Cos
tiveness, riles, I.eucorihasa, or Vvhites, obstructed or
difficult Menstruation. Incontinence of Urine, or in
voluntary discharge thereof, and for the general pros
tration of the aystem—no matter whether the result
of inheicnt cause or causes, produced by irregularity,
illness or accident Nothing can be more surprising
than its invigorating effeuts on the human frame.
Persons all weakness and lassitude, from taking it, at
once become robust and full of energy under its in
fluence. It immediately counteracts the nerveless
tie us of the female frame, which is the great cause of
Barrenness. It will not be expected of us, in cases of
so delicate a nature, to exhioit certificates of cures
performed, but we can assure the afflicted, that hun
dreds of cases have been reported to us. Thousands
of casea where families have been without children,
after using alew bottles of this invaluable Medicine,
have been blessed with fine, healthy offspring.
Great Blessing to Mothers and Children.
It is the safest and most effectual medicine for
purifving the system, and relieving the sufteuugs at
tenda'ut upon childbirth ever discovered. It strength
ens both the mother and tho cluld, pi events pain aud
disease, increases and enriches the food ; those who
have used it. think it is indispensable. It is highly use
ful both befoie and after confinement, as it prevents
diseases attendant upon child-birth—in Coetivcnesa,
Plica, I'rampa, Swelling of the Feet, Despondency.
Heartburn, Vomiting, Pain in the Back and Lions,
False Pains, Hemorrhage, and in regulating the secre
tions and equalizing the circulation, it has no equal.
'The great heuuty of this aiedicine is, it is always safe,
and the most delicate use it most successfully, very
few cases require any other medicine, in some a
little Castor Oil, or Magnesia is useful. Exercise in
the opeu air, and light food with this medicine, will
always secure a safe and easy confinement.

DR. 8. P. Towxsr.xD—Dear Sir : 1 have suffered ter
ribly for nine years with the Itheumatism ; considera
ble of the time I could not eat, sleep or walk. I had
the utmost distressing pains, and my limbs were ter
ribly swollen. 1 have used four bottles ol your Sarsa
paiilla, and they hfcve done ine more than one thou
sand dollars worth of good, I am so much better—in
deed 1 am entirely relieved. You are at liberty to
use this for the benefit of the afflicted.
Yours respectfully, JAMES CUMMJNGB.
The Rev. John Beger
Of Jersey City, an ol<l and highly respectable clergy
man of the baptist Denomination, handed in the fol
lowing certificate arDr. 8. P. Townsend's office. It
speaks for itself.
DR. S. P. TOWNBKNO—Dear Sir: I am constrained to
give you a statement of the benefit 1 derived from
using your Sarsapniilla, believing, by so doing, I
shall render a benefit to those who are suffering as 1
have been. I was reduced for many months by the
Dy*pe|*ia, so much that it was with much difficulty
for me to walk or keen about. 1 had also a tetter,
which covered the most pait of my head—which was
extremely troublesome and sore ; it got to be almost
a scab. 1 used quite a number of remedies for both
the complaints, but received little or no benefit, until
I took your Sarsaparilla, which, through the kindness
of Providence, has restored me to more than my usual
health, as I am now enjoying better than I have for a
number of years. I am now 60 years of age. 1 be
lieve it to be an invaluable medicine, and recommend
it to my numerous acquaintances, which is very
large, as I have been a minister a great many years
i hope this hasty sketcli may be as much benefit to
you as your nieuiciue has to me.

The following was sent to our Agent in Rahway,
by the Rev. J. O. TUN I SON. of the Methodist Episco

the connection—and is nnother evidence of the won

the system.
FHIRND Prsasow—Having for some time past, as yon
are aware, experienced great general debility of my
system, attended with constant ami alarming irritation
a.'iny tin oat and lungs, I was, at your instance, and in
Consequence of having lead Captain McLeau's de
cided testimony in its behalf, induced to try Dr. 8. P.
Townsend's far-fumed Saisaparilla. 1 tried it, I con
fess, more in the hope than in the confidence of iti
proving efficacious ; but 1 am bound in candor now to
acknowledge, that I had not tried it long before I be
gan to experience its salutary effects ; and I may now
say, with Captain McLean, "thut I would not be with
out it on any consideration." It has done me more
Sood than any previous remedy I have tried, and if
lis statement is deemed by you of any importune*,
you have my full consent to'make it public.
