Christopher William Hoofland.
"One of the most renowned physicians;
one of the greatest benefactors of modem
times, was born at Longen Salza, Germany, \
on the 12th day of august 1762. After a
careful scholastic education, he, like his fath
er and grandfather, (two celebrated Doctors.)
voluntarily devoted himself to the study of
Medicine, at Jena and Gottigon, and in 1783
obtained the degree of Doctor of Medioine,
at the lattor University. From 1793 to 1801,
he officiated as Professor at the University of
Jena. In 1801, he was appointed Private
Physician to the King of Prussia, Member
of the Academy of Science, and upon the
establishment of the near College at Berlin,
Professor and Court Physician by the Minis
try of the Interior. His characteristic pro
loundnesa and deep penetration enabled bim
to combine the theoretical and praetical; to
udite old and new systews; produce in com (
mon the practical and useful, and thus draw
therefrom the results and necessary applica
ble means.
"h was Dr. H. principally, who exposed
and destroyed the 'Brown's System,' which,
notwithstanding the brilliant exterior, could
not conceal its many imperfections, brought
to light by Hoofland's noble impartiality,
sound truths, and deep penetration. Inde
pendent of his pruclical usefulness as Phy
sician and Professor of the healing art, ne
has earned uddying fame for his superior
knowledge in Materia. Medico, as well as for
his manifold works on Medical jurispru
dence. A mong these may be mentioned his
world renowned ' hlalerobcolile, or the art of
prolonging life,' 'System of practioal healing
art," •Ideas of Pathogenic,' Journal of prac
itical Medicine,' &c. He has besides all this
gained eternal lame and praise from suffer
ing humanity for the 4'iseovery and combi
nation of several ir talliblo modicinals, a

ebrated compound, ktiown as

"Dr. C. M. Jackson, of Philadelphia, has
had tho means of obtaining the genuine re
cipes of the great medical councellor 'Chris
toph Wilhohit Hufeland,' and those invalu
able medicines ure prepared with the utmost
care at the German Medicino Store. The
bitter mixture: Hoofland's German Bitters,
is the result of many years study and expe
rience by the great inventor, and known and
prized in Europe as an infallible remedy for
the cure of Liver Complaint Jaudice, Dyspep
sia Ifc. Dr. C. M. Jackson's preparation of
this medicine has obtained the same celebri
ty in this Western World. The testimonials
and innumerable confirmations of thousands
of tho most severe and difficult casas cured,
is ample proof of this. The medicines com
peunded by Dr. G. M. Jackson have produced
the very effeotsand the same happy results,
which the immortal inveutor indicated, and
intended, and consequently must be "prepar
ed lyith scrupulous accuracy. In view of
the above facts it seems singular, that any
budy could have the hardihood and impu
dence to abuse the name of this distinguish
ed Doctor, who died thirteen years ago. To
pass off n charlatan quack preparation as the
real and genuine medicine, and to give a
semblance of originality by affixing a fac
simile of the deceased, is indeed extraordi
nary ! The public will understand what to
expect, and what to do tinder such circum
stances."
A number of German papers oopied the
above and are therefore entitled to our
thanks.
These bitters are worthy the attention of
invalids. Possessing great virtues in the
rectification of' disease of the liver and les
ser glands, exercising the most searching
powers in weakness and affections of the
digestive organs, they are withal, safe, cer

A WONDERFUL CURE.
Hunterdon County, N. J,
Dr. 8. A, Pearson, Dear Sir—About ■ year a
go I became severely afflicted with a pain in my
breat and aide, an extremely bad cough, spitting of
blood, debility, night sweats, and other symptoms
of confirmed consumption, I became so much re
duced that I was unable to attend to my ordinary
business. 1 made application to a physician, who
examined my chest, and gave it as his decided o
pinion that my longs were seriously affected. I
then app.Hl to another, who was of the same o
pinion, and after having prescribed advised me to
return to my friends.
Previous to this I had for a long lime been la
boring under all the symptoms usually found with
persona laboring under disease of ike lungs, and
it was thought by oil who knew me that I was fast
wearing away with decay.
At the time I applied to the physicians I was
laboring under a severe attack of spitting blood,
with pain in my breast and aide. Their preserip
tions failed to relieve the pain, and all their skill
could not arrest the discharge of blood from my
lungs. This being my condition, I was induced
o make a trial of your valuable Pulmonic Expec
'urnnt, oy the use or which I was immediately re
lieved of all these unpleasant symptoms, and am
now so far restored jo health, that iAm able to
attend to all my ordinary business, and expose
myself as much as it is prudent for any one to do.
I would therefore confidently recommend every
person who is laboring under disease of the lungs
and breast, or who are afflicted with colds or with
coughs, to make trial of your most valuable prep
aration- I would further oddlbat after having
made use of your Expectorant for a few weeks, I
becamd so fie'sy that persons with whom I was
acquainted hardly knew ihe. i still remain in good
health at this time, March, 1846.
