DARLEY AND RYE FOR HOUSES.
A correspondent of tho "Country Gen
tleman" writes aa follows :
''My first oxporienco in feeding barley
to horsca waa in California, whero th'ero
was no other grain raised for feed at tho
time I was thoio,. All our horses were
fed on it for twoears without any change
and ncvor got tired of it, always thriving
and lookiDg remarkably fine for tho
amount of labor they performed. This
induced mo to raiso it to fesd after my
return from that country and I have
learned to esteem it higher than any other
grain (when ground; for horse, It is
too hard to feed in tho grain. It is less
liablo to founder thau corn, wheat or rye
yet oontains but very littlo less nutriment
than either of ihoso grains. I have rais
ed a great many colts and havo made
tho breeding of trotting horses a study,
and in all my cspericnoo I have found
nothing equal to barley moal to make a
maro give milk. I havo found it no
disadvantage to a maro getting with foal
and not any while sho was so. Oata arc
u better feed for colts from weaning time
until they go to work.
"Rye is a dangerous grain to feed alone;
it is more liabln to founder than any other
grain; but to mis with shorts, or to grind
with oats and feed with out hay or straw,
it makes an excellent feed for horses."
OLD FRUIT TREES RENOVATED.
There were old apple trees in profusion
with nearly, a hundred pear trees of supe
rior vigorous growth, but utterly neglec
ted and reported as yielding small crop of
indifferent fruit. The out-going -acller of
tho farm had intended to cut them down,
llo kuew tho market valuo of pickles, but
the pear culture was a sealed book. The
buyer educated in a different school, bo
lioved that there was yet a monoy value in
these tree?, and that they could bo resus
citated. Wo stood among them and de
bated the question. He thought that here
was a foundation to begin upon and that
an investment uf money iu rdviving them,
would yield a far quicker return than iD
waiting for the product of a uew-planted
orchard. Among other facts and exper
ience, reference was made to tho niemor
abls account recorded in this journal,
nearly twenty years ago, of the complete
renovation of two outcast pear trees. Like'
all those, they had onco borne excellent
crops of fruit, but for soveral years had
only produced worthless specimens. The
owner waa told that the trees for there
wcro several in like condition bad ex
hausted tho proper element in tho soil and
that it miibt be re introducsd by aitificial
means. That autumn ho carried out the
si.ggestiou and scraped off all the rough
outer bark from two trees then coated
them with soft soap cut, about one-third
of all tho poorest branches and shortened
tho hcau" of tho trees onc-tliird by cut
ting buck tho principle limbs paring tho
woundj and covering them with tho shel
lac solution. The preparation being made
a trench was dug around each tree, three
feet from tho eamo, four feet wido and
twenty inches deep, tho soil being carted
away. In making this trench, about a
third of the roots wcro cut away. The
trench was thcn.Cllcd with soil from a good
pasture fiald, thero being added at the
timo of filling two bushels of rduso Booriro
from a blacksmith's forgo, two of well bro
ken charcoal, and two pounds of pulveri
zed potash. All these wcro thoroughly
intti mingled after lho trenoh had been
filled, by frcqut nt ovoiturnings with tho
i-nauc. Tho result of this uhoan and aim.
plo operation was manifest tho following
summer. The luxuiianco and vigor of tho
foliage were surprising for tho newly form
ed roots woro wandering into frcih aud
wholesome pasture. Tho next thero was
a moderato bloom, but every blossom
produced fruit. The tLird year thoro was
a lino crop, tho two trees producing six
bushels of eubcrb fruit. It was convinc
ing ovideno that the failure of the old es
tablished pear trees to produco good crops
is owing to a want of proper nutriment in
tho toil, and thatiustead of being cut down
when they cease- to bear thoy should bo
taken in hand aud rouuvatid,
