Farmer's Department. Surface Manuring. Respecting surface manuring, I have this to Bay, thut where Ibc manuro lies) closely to ibo mil, (a good cotiituoii enil) , but a littlo strength escapes. 1 Gnil it cs- J pcoially beneficial where tlio toil is com pnet, yet mellow, thus forming a more 1 concentrated source of attraction. 1 think 1 I havo seen the bes-t success on snil where cloy largely preponderates. Clay, it Is now known, I presume, beyond dispute, has an affinity ior the principal fertilizing gases. I havo never known manure benefit land luffitient to pay expeuso of cartago and spreading where it i put ou late in tho sprirg, nnd in lump, as I havo often seen it practised. Many fanners oartout their manure, especially from the cow-stablo, nfter their spring's work is done, and then Toll tho dry lumps over tho meadow. These always complain of the inefficiency or surface manuring ; and after a few tri ills, abandou it. Drawing out in tho early winlcr, ero tho snow is on tho ground, is bcnefioinl, My neighbor Smith, covered tho knoll in this way ; tho snow packed it down, and when tho spiing rains came, they held it down, hugging the sod close a timothy sod of two year's standing. Tho result was that the crop was remarkable. Tho line was dravvu wherever the manure extended, as through a rope bad been drawn to mark the difference. Tbero were coarser stalks, nnd they wore from ten to twcjve inches tallcr.and tho beads the largest aud plump est I over saw. Tbia was two years ago when the season was very moist. I havo seen manure thrown into heaps in winter, and left thero till spting. It proved a damage to the crop, Tho ma nure was sprcau as soon as ttic trost was out of it. Weeds in this case seemed to possess the soil. A very fine effect fine always, so far as I havo seen it practised is tbo applica tion rather curly in the fall, so that the manuro catches the rains, and tome of the warmth, and the grass gets a (tart, so as to possess itsclf,so toppeak,of tho manure, making- it so much surface soil, But hero is the point. We sometimes apply too thick, so that tho upper port of tbo manure goes, muoh of it. into moshere ; the lower the ground Our fiiendWictiDg, in order to the at gets. remedy thii (he had a poor yellow knuil drift I think), applied a thin coat one year, close to the ground and got a good orop ; the next year bo applied auothcr, with still greater effect. A man was formed by the firm coat, and but little manure was vini b!e. The seoond coat seemed to impart all its strength,as did the first. We m.nt t-pread rather thin and cloie or we have a chance to lose muoh of our manure. When it is harrowed in or mixed wiih aoil, even if lightly, but thoroughly, a heavy coal no doubt will do will do if the ground is mixed with it to tho depth of the plowed mellow coil. If not mellow, wo have nev er had good luek There iiiut evdidently bo an attraction of the soil,or the air, whicb Imh uu attraction, will get its share of the benefits oi the manure. Wu have, however, never known a crop to lu I, wbuu composed in good part of ground or muck, as in the caso when com poetud. Here the application is soil its self. o think no fanner can obiect to the excellent effect of surfaeo manuring, when the soil is a denso mellow, and the manure is finely and elosily applied, and in tho fall or early winter. Country Gentleman. Cure oC Foot Rot in Sheep. I have repeatedly nscd bho following treatment for foot rot in olieep with com plt'le eucci's-i. Prepare a solution of blue vitriol us strong as ibcuu be mado.by pul verizing arid di&solring in warm soft water. Each hoof should then be exam ined, thoroughly cle imrd with a kiiift'.arjd. if too long, cut' to the propor dimensions If no infection be found, let tuo men take tho thecp with a leg in each hand and dip every foot into tho solution of vitriol. VLun an infected hoof is found, carefully par it until every purtiole of tho inac tion is exposed aoid bleeding tho foot if possible. Then thoroughly saturate tbo fool with epirits of tui pontine from a via! with a quill inserted in the cork ; pour on as muoh One powder as you can make ad hoio to the toot in tho solution as above directed. The 'bcop hnu."d ihen run on a rlf .us floor until tho rem idies havo had Eufficieut time to take effect. I have cured an entire fhek with a Bin gle course of tho above treatment. Rut to bo safe, tho samo should be in five or seven days, and if any infection bo found, repeat again, an obstinate oako'bo found whero repeated casta of Should tbo rot has penetrated into the oentre of the quick the sheep should bo put into u pen or Email yard by itself, and- subjected every, pecond day to tho procriled treatment. Thoroughness is the great seoret of suvoess in treating tin- loot-rot. The knife is the principal remedy, if sharp and skilfully handled ,.'hncri-in Jg riciiUuritt, DR. B.
