How can Farming be made more
Attractive.

Farmer's Olub :
Bv Iccb hard work. Farmffrs often
undertako moro than they can do well, and
., , , ' , , ', .
consequently work too early and too late.
3. By moro system. Tho farmers
should havo a timo to begin and stop la-
lor. Thoy should theorbo as well as
jractico, and let both go togoiher. Farm -
t i ,i.
ing is healthy, moral and respectable ; in
the long run proutablc. Tlio taruicra
should keep good stock and be out of debt,
The farm is the best place to begin and
end life, and henco so many in the cities
and professional line covet a rural home.
3, By Inking care of health. Farmers
havo a healthy varioty of exorci'o, but too
often neglect cleanliness, omit bathing, cat
irregularly and hurriedly, sleep in ill-vcn-
ventilated apartments, and expose them
.selves to cold, Nino-tenths of the human
diseases arise from cold? or intemperance.
Frequent bathing is profitable, so is fresh
air, deliberation at tho dinner tablo and
Jreit after a meal.
4, By adorning tho homo, Nothing is
lost by a pleasant home. Books, papers,
musio and reading should all be brought
.to bear upon tho indoor family entertain
merit : and neatness, order, comfort,
thrubbery, flowers and fruit should liar
'.monizo all without. Homo should be a
eanctuary so happy and holy that children
trill lovo it, women delight in it, mnnhood
cravo it, and old ago fcujoy it. There
'would bo loss desertions of old homo.-tends
if pains were taken to make them agreea
ble. Ease, order, hoalth and beauty arc
compatible with farm lifo and were ordain
ed to go with it.
USEFUL HINTS.
, Tho decoction of camomile leaves is
said. to destroy various inseots ; the living
plant imparts health to other plauls, often
reviving drooping ones.
Potatoes contain nearly all thoirnutii-
.mcnt (tho st&rnb) very near the surface ;
henco let the peeling bo as thin as pos
sible. Thorough preparation of land is abso
lutely necessary to tho successful growth
of crop.
Tho chopping or grinding cf grain to
bo fed to stock, operates as a saving of
.at least 35 per cent.
Clover, as well as tho grasses, intended
foi.hay, should bo mown when in blossom.!
AH
grain crops,
should bo harvested
before the grain is thoroughly ripe.
All wot lands should bo drained.
D.'cp plowing greatly improves tho pro
duotivo powers of every variety of mil
jtltat is not wet.
All permanent improvement of land
must look to limo as its basis.
No land can be preserved in a high
state of fertility unless rlovcr and the gras.'
ess aro eulttiatctl in the courts or rotation.
'Mould is imlfopuosiblo in every soil, and
a healthy supply can only bo preserved
'through the cultivation of clover and the
.grasses, tho turning in of green crops or
y the application of comports rich in the
elements of mould.
HOW TO GET A GOOD CROP OF
POTATOES.
A correspondent informs us that Capt
S. Hayden, of Holli, adopts the follow
ing plan in plaLlicg patators, and has first
rate luck. On ground plowed in the
Spring he furrows as deep as ho can with
out turning up the turf. He propares hi
raanuro by putting in tho green manure
some loam, aches and limo of salt not very
strong. He cuts Lis potatoes so that one
as largo as a hen's rgg would he divided
into "threo or lour pieces, and puts three
pieces in a hill, tho i-kin side up, or six
ini hcs apart. lie then puts a shcvtlful
of wonuro on tho top of tho potatoes. The
result is that his potatoes yield at the rato
of from eight to ten hills for tho bushel
or good market potatoes. He told mo ho
took good sized potatoes to plant, The
potatoes he raised wero large enough
vrould ovcrogo as large as turkey's cgtjs.
ATito England lanner
Canada Thistle.
As this pest has already rendered val-ueless-
sumo of the most productive por
tions of tho country, it is of the utraot
importanoe that the greatest caro should
bolaken to prevent ltd propagation, and
to eradicate it wbcra it has gained a
foothold, This can be done by proper at
tention, and tho use of common salt. First
bruise the stalk of the thUtle at the sur
faca of lite ground with the head of hoo
or other instrument, and apply a handful
of salt ts the root.
IIjpe-Bou.M) HonsEd, Hide-bound
horses tire soon brought into goo I condi
tion by careful grooming, a handful of hick
ory ahes and salt every third day and
yellow poplar poles or brush placed with
in their reach so they huva access to the
bark at their pleasure.
IiAH,i:y tor iir.Ns. Thoro is io one
grain so well suited as food (or hens.
Barley when fed with oats and corn will
often be gathered first by the fowls, and
hens fed with moro or less barley, are said
to ley freely, We havo used barloy and
peas mixed and our return of eggs is evi
deaeo of tho suitableness of tho food.
