LET FARMERS READ THIS.
Tho higli price of farming productions
is a kind of ignis Jatuns which lures tho
formes to support the wnr polioy of tho Ad
inims.rn.liou, while tho soil under his feet
h sliding injparccptably away, and carry
iug him to irretrievable ruin. It may
Btartlc a farmer to tell lum that half of
his farm now belongs to the Govornmeut,
but it is nevertheless true. Efcn admit
ting that tho Southorn S.-tatcs will bo com
pelled to return to their allcgionca, still tho
half of every farm in Jtho Union, at the
oash valuc, accordiug to tho consus of 1800,
if Eold, and tho money paid over, would
not pay the present National debt.
The cash value of all the farms in the
United States, is sisty hundred millions of
dollars. Thirty goes into sbty twice. If
overy farm iu tho thirty-four States, was
sold, and the money received, it would take
one-half of it to pay tho National dabt.
But suppose the war goes on a year or
two moro, then it will take the lull price
of every (arm to pay tho debt that is the
country put up at auction would pay the
debt, provided the land brought its oash
value.
Suppose again, that the war will imme
diately close with tho recognition of the
Southern Confederacy, then the North
would have to pay tho debt j and it would
tko every farm ,-.fc cash value to pay the
dobt incurred during the last three years.
But it is argued that the immense re
courccs of the North arc sufficient for tho
debt. Well, whoro arc tho resources ?
All the raoucy arising from duties, income
Ux, and the sale of lands, will not pay
half of the interest on thia debt and defray
tho civil expenses of the General Govern
ment, while the other part of tho interest
will aunvsally go to increase the debt.
How then will it be paid ?
Wiiy, the Abolitionists say, ''let pos
terity pay tho debt." 13ut posterity oin
not do it, as tho resources of tho entire
Government are inadequate to pay half
t -j ,
tho interest. Desidos, posterity may have
wars and expeuser of its own, fo that if
-
left eniirely unencumbered, it would re
qu'ra all the cuonomy possiblo to keep out
of debt.
Three years ago we wero out of debt ;
now ve owe thirty hundred millions, be
sides unliquidated damacos for losses of
oteaniboats, railroads, "bridges, ships, goods
nnd chattels ; end-three years might en
cumber posterity as much as three yeais
has cccunibcre'd us. Then posterity can
not pay it. Well, how sill it bo paid f
Another plan is to repudiate ; but re
pudiate is brnkruptcy. So lake it as ou
will the inevitable "negro'-' has upset tho
titlo of all our lands and involved us all iu
eternal bankruptcy and disgrcce.
Hero aro the statistics :
No of acre3 in th 3-1 States, 407,000,000
Oash value of tho land, SO, 000,000,000
JJrascnt National debt, 3,300,000,000
Interest on the National debt, 103,000,000
Assessment of iutercfct per caditas'iz.
dollars per head for roan, nionian and
chug, black and white, every year. If
put sn the land it is a fraction of fifty-cents
per acre, there being two hundred millions
of inierest and four hundred millions of
acres.
Now, as our Government has never
done more than barely sustain itself in tho
most prosporpous periods, it Is fair to ar
gue that it will always tako its ordinary,
revenues to pay its ordinary expenses. If
this position bo correct, the Nation must
rasort to taxation to pay tho interest on a
ueut can never pay, and with tho other
enormous rates of tax, tho burden becomes
to groat to bear. Enston Argus,
Is a speech, recently matlo to 6omo
Doldiors in Philadelphia, by Gen. Msabe
the following passage ocours :
"I havo juft left the crmy, where I
must soon return. There all your old
comrades aro re-enlisting, anxious to re
main in tho army uuiil thry bring this un
natural and unholy war to a termination )
& termination whioh shall be worthy of
th old nag, and an honor to the Govern
ment. And this mutt be tho re-establish-znent
of tbo old Union in its former glory,
end the ackdowlcdgmont ol tho Constitu
tion from one end of this eontioent to the
other."
Is General Meado a ''Copporhtad I"
What Oopporho'atl does not want tha "Ra
establishment of the old Union, and tho
acknowledgment of tha Constitution from
ono end of this coutinent to the other 1"
And on the other hand, what Republican I
