Farmer's Department. rvZer?Tt rr-etja i ijhhkhuihiiiiui ww 'SCRATCHES" IN HOUSES. Tliia doscaso, called alto "groato" iu Eunland nnd insomcnarUuf tlii.-t niitinirv. 0 i j j often attacks the heels ami Iciia of nog. leotcit horses, and though easily prevented, la difficulty to cure, if of long standing. It cotniucncos with inflammation of tho oil glanda of tho akin about tho hind feet. Tlicso vessels, named stbaccos glands, nupply a fluid to soften tho skin and pre vent its cracking. Thoso glands arc es pecially needed and very active about tho hind feet of tho bora?, where, by frequent excrciso of tho parts, tho skin is subject to almost constant alternate wrinkling and expansion. The toughest leather would soonvic'il under such treatment, unless kept well softened by oiling. Tho c il glands may beconio inflamed by sudden cold, as when a horso after exercise over wet roads is allowed to stand in tho Ha l'i witheut cleaning and drying tho hair nut tho feet, Tho animal being warm, lu.Nsturo rapidly vapcrates and carries with it tho heat from tho neighboring ports; congestion ensues, and inflamation commences. It may be slight at first, but' by neglect it will bo likely to extend and affect tho surrounding burfaco and also tho deeper Bcatcd structures, resulting in a disorder disgusting in its appearance, and painful to the hort!. Or it may be caused by standing on a filthy stable floor in wet straw and excrements, the moisture from which not only produces cold, but from its naturo irritates tho skin; thereby including the disease. As it progresses, tho hair drops off, the heels swell, the skinassumcs a glazed ap pearance, is covered with pustules, and emits an unctuous discharge which soon becomes very oHensivc- Unless properly treated, tho leg halfway to the hock is crusted over with thick, horny soaps, di vided by deep cracks, when tho affection is scarcely curable. Prevention is found in clean stables, and in thorough drcinr and rubbing of tho legs after the horse has been used. Close clipping of the hair which ordinarily grows long about the legs, deprives these parts of their natural protection, rendering them more liable to the cratches, and is therefore objection able. If the disease uufortunately appearj, Herbert receommends to clip off all the hair from tho affected parts, and thorough ly cleanse tbcm with warm water and Cas ' tilo soap. Then apply a flannel bandage - evenly over tho limb, and frequently mois ten it with warm water, allowing it to dry on the part. To soften the skin, apply an ointment of one drachm of sugar of lead in an ounco of lard. If there are crackF, wash them with a solution of four ounces of alum in a pint of water. Feed the horso on bran mashes, carrots, and green feed, and if there bo much inflammation .after a day or two, administer a ball of four or five drachma of aloes. If tho diseaso has reached tho second stage, ,tbrco doses of physio at intervals of two days will bo needed. Tho best ap plication -to itba liecls will bo a poultice jnado of 'boiled and mashed carrots, put on tolerably hot. It can bo conveniently applied by 'drawing an old stocking leg over the leg, confining it at tho fetlock , joint, and filling it from above with thn poultice. "When this is removed, anoint tho heels with an ointment of ono part of rosin, three parts of lard melted together, and one part of calamine powder, added when tho first mixturo is cooling. American Agriculturist. RELIEVING CHOKE CATTLE. A correspondent of the Maine Farmer gives tho followiug method for relieving choaked cattle, and also a preventive; Tako a rind of pork three inches square, and tio it over tho end of a smooth straight stick with tie flesh sido out. This forms a kiiid of Bwab that may bo forced down tho animal's throat without injury ; at least it has always proved so with mo. But a preventative is better than a cure; Cattlo may be prevented froai being chok ed when fed on potatoes, apples, or any tbiugof tho kind, by simply tying their head down to the stanchion so that they cannot tako it upon a level with thoir body. This prevents anj thing from accidontally slipping down their tbroaif, which is the cause of cattle getting choked ; not by attempting to swallow that which too largo. Oattlo when treated as above des cribed, will eat jiut as well, and without iho least danger of getting choked. 1 havo tried it several years and Uavo never known it to fail, It is worth trying. riMIEFropricturof this well-known nml centrally Ides.
