LITTLE KINDNESS.
Lillla drops of dew
Oivo lifo to fainting flowers j
I.iltlo moments beating truo
Make up this life of ours.
Prom Iho tiny ncorn pprings
Proudcat of majestic trees ;
And from little fluttering winga
Fall tho sweetest melodies.
And as tho little golden seeds
Glorious harvests may impart.
So will littlo kindly deeds
Mako a heaven of tho heart.
Dostthousometimcsdoull thy strength
Dost thou weak anil trembling feel ?
Sco ! tho little trickling stream
Turns at last tho giant wheel.
Sco tho ber.utcous coral islo,
Mark those grottro of the wave ;
They should make thoc wear a smilo,
And thy heart grow bold and brave
For, liko daisies from the sod
To tho weary-winter heart,
So, tho weakest child of God
May somo thrill of joy impart.
KEPOSti FARMING.
It is Rvskin, wo believe, who regards
repose as an clomement or iudes of pow
er. Ho certainly decmos it an essential
in all works of art. Rut applied to agri
culture, tho reader will regard it anomal
ous. It may be ; but, wc bcliovo, that
most depended upon tho rnodo of applica
tion. It is proverbial that the men who exert
tho strongest influence among their fellows
who sway tho popular mind in whoso
judgment and lauguagc the publio rely
with confidence, aro ths most deliberate,
cool, reposeful men in the community.
And this givc3 a good reason for what
they do ; they do nothing unless they
have a clear, logical reason for doing it.
When a plan is adopted, it is prosecuted
with a persistence and power which con
scious strength gives to purpose. The
plan is as distinct and defined, and the
results as clearly ecu by the director, as
if they had been already demonstrated.
But tho nervous, ucvsr stand still, con
sequently the on-thc-go sort of a man, is
usually as fickle and unreliable in charac
ter and results of his oppcratious, as he i
in bis mental strength. Ho floats on the
sea of circumstances. He yields to' every
impulse. Hedrifts into every current, and
ttands on every sandbar. lie has no re
pose, no strength, no success, Ho never
finishes what he commences ; never com
mences what he ought, and often begins
when ho ought not. And this quality of
mind or character U fatal to a farmer.
Such a man should cultivate roposc. Ho
should deliberate, llo should seek tho
strength which comes of calculation. lie
should yield to- no impulso until ho can
convinco himself that ho has a Inm'iblc
ruason for it. IIo should, to a certain ex
tent, become skeptfcal of his own judg
ment, and strengthen it by quiet, discreet
counsel from his fellow farmers, in whoso
judgment aud experience ho can rely.
A sober, secoud thought saves the farm
ct from loss of money a.ul disappointment.
And whilo wc do not plead the cause of
iudolenco or inaction, wo do urge deliber
ation in all tbiugs. Farmer ij Gardener.
TOBACCO.
The extraordinary high price of tob.icco,
consequent upon tho rebellion, as well as
tho high rates of duty upon all of the im
ported kinds, has drawn tho attention of
farmers to the subject of its culture, so
that we look for a large tobacco crop in
Pennsylvania thid year than ever beforo.
The culturo of this plant has becomo a
very important branch of farming in the
counties of Lancaster. Chester, Berks, Le
banon, York and Cumberland. It is
gradually extending itself to other sections,
aud will, wo have no doubt, soon becomo
a general crop.
