account of Vallatitliglinin's arrival in tho

"Mr. Vollauiligham haa just arrived.
Ho was brought to our lines by a ling of

rcfiucil to rccognizs it for any such pur
poso. Tho Federals, becoming alarmed,
retired, leaving Mr. Viillandlgham, with
his baegage, upon neutral groubSl. When
our officers approachrd him he proposed
delivering himself as a pmoner of war.
This was declined in asmuch aj ho was
not in the service of the United States.
On learning his name and situation, ho
was received as an exile banished from his
State, and as sucli tendered tho hospitali
ties of the country, as any foreigner Beck
ing refuge or banished from homo for opin
ion's sake, lie was rcccivod by Gen.
Mason, and escorted to his headquaitoM
without any doniotistration. There ho was
received by Col. J Htodriard Johnston,
of Gen. Bragg s stuff, and by him convey-
laoic quarters wero rrrowautl tor Iiim.
Th ere was to demonstration, but every
whore lis patted, thoso who had heard of
his coining greeted him kindly and wilh
silent tokens ofsympathy and rcpert.
''Mr. Vallandigham looks cheerful and
socnis to breathe easy oa escaping from tho

desires to avoid public demonstrations, and
only asks that ho may find a quiet rcfugo
in our midst until fueh time as tho veinn

Government; shall call him again to thoir

yond a doubt, bo equal to its rcponsibili
tifs. Dignified retirement and seclusion
Irom all public matters will to the minda
of all proper thinking persons, and doubt
less to his own, be tiie best courso for him
to pursue."
Tho same paper editorially says : "His
(Vallandigham's) road, which loads up the
steep ascent of the future, is direct and
gas-lighted all tho way. It loads first out
of some Confederate port to Nassau, thence
