Farmer's Depaitmcnt. sat z. jCteSSsBW! :kt: PLANTING CUTTINGS. Wc aro constantly hearing peoplo say tlicy liavo no luck in making grnpc or other outtings grow just as if Muck" had anything to do with it. They fail in not giving duo attontion to the matter ; in othor words, the crtuio is neglect and in different. Tho old addago should novor bo forgotten, apply it wheresoever wo may ,CA thing that is worth doing at all is worth doing well." Thcro should bo properly threcjoyes to every cutting then dig a ironeh set the cuttings nt an anglo of 45 degrees, at lcust nix inches apart, and so that the uppor eye phall bo an inch abovo tho ground and press tho earth around tho wood firmly with tho loot. It is well to mulch them with grass or straw, and if need be water them occasionally in the driest weather. Soso varieties of tho grapo aro propc gated mnph ruoro freely titan others. l)'or instanco tho Concord Maxatawny, Isabclly, Hartford Prolific, Telegraph, Clinton. Cassidaa, &c, &c, take root road ily ; while tho Delaware and Diana are difficulty to propogato in open cnlturo un less great care is paid to them, and a good portion of wood is used. Wo believe all the raspberry family can bo propogatcd in tho same way. We havo now fifty growing under glass,Jcut- tiocs of the Cattawissa, manv of them in leaf! The mulberry can he grown in the same .way. Wo all kuow how easily currants and cooscbcrrics. Wo havo had both the latter to bear tho year after setting out. Currants and gooseberries should bo set out just where they aro wished to stand permanently. If you prefer a tree, cut out all tho eyes beneath tho surface of the ground; if a bush, lot tho eyes remain. These cuttings ought to be planted at least eight inches deep, and tbo earth pressed firmly around them. A largo proportion of flourish ing shrubs can also bo propogatcd by cuttings and this should bo known by all who hava ''luck" in multiplying their stock in this aroy. MILKING. It is no easy matter to teach an old man ' or woman how to milk a cow. The art should bo taught to all children, while they are capablo of learning. They should learn in the first place to treat tho cows with kindness, for I know of but few cows that will bo forced to part with all their milk. But when treated with kindness, they are pleased to bo relieved of a flood " in distended udder, and will never object to bo stripped clean when a known friend approaches. It is quite important to milk cows with rapidity. Let no ono be permitted to sit and talk to a friend while drawing out tho .milk. Let the operator know that no talk is to be permitted in tho cow-yarJ, for milking and talking arc two distinct oper ations, and must never be united. The milk must bo all drawn out with rapidity, or a portion of it the best islost. In half a minuto after commencing the process of drawing out tho milk there is a rapid flow which must not be checked. If the cow is left a minuto or two when half the milk is drawn the natural flood is checked, the milk returns back into tho ducts and you must wait for a part of it until tho next milking timo. By a repe tition of this careless mode of milking, tho quantity is gradually diininMied, till in a short time tho cow is dry. Whereas, ! by attention to the milking with rapidity , and draw all from tho udder, the cow will , yield her milk freely fur ten month af Xcr her time of calving. 1 hold that all cows ought to go dry two mouths before .having another calf. For more tenderness, nothing is better than tho abovo or vino gar a little diluted .with water. HARROWING WHEAT IN THE SPRING A correspondent to tho Genesee Farm r givos an incident showing tho benefit of ,this praoticc. A fanner going to burrow in Bomo oats at tho farther end of a neigh bor's wheat field, went with tho drag across the wheat, making him very angry. ''But when ho came to harvest the crop, ho was surprised to find the strip over which tho drag had passed, tho tallest and heaviest wheat in the field." OXEN. Being well mated, oxen aro morooasily trained ; and the moro easily to affect (hit, much self denial on tho part of tlio driver, muoh coolness of temper, mere irainiug by motion and less by voice, may bo highly advantageous to man and to Koast.
