For wintor feed for cows tlint give rriilk, I have novor tried anything tlint gavo bt'tter satisfaction than good bright o irn fodder and carrots. With these, and an occasional mess of cabbage, say two or three times a week, vc have made as good butter as I over saw, both as re gards color and flavor and keeping quali ties. Wo have inoro than once kept but- tn made from cows led in tins way nn December until the ncxl June, and hail 5l as sweet and good as when first made And to my mind better, as I believe that well made butter that keeps well, will in two or thrso months acquire a certain ripeness, or rich nutty flavor, that makes it superior to any new butler. Wc sel dom lay down any butter for winter until Dec as wo are sure of making good but ter then, and plenty of it. This is ano ther object in feeding well, and such kind of feed as arc well calculated to make cows give plenty of rich milk By so doing wc arc now (about the middle of January) making from thecc to four pounds of butter a week, from cows coin ing in in the spring, while most ot our neighbor's cows, that don't have any extra feed, arc now dry, or nearly so. Besides the kinds of feed already alieud cd to, there are many othrrs3 as the diff erent kinds of roots also of grain and of bran. Of the latter, I have found that made from buckwheat, decidedly thc best, making more and better butter. Wheat bran increases thc ainout of milk, hut seldom makes butter of first quality ; but will do better with tltc additiont of a little Indian mo 1. K feeding clear grain, I prefer corn and oats, mixed in the pro portion of two bushels of the latter to one of the former, aud ground. But 1 consider this pretty strong feed, unless mixed with wheat bran or shorts, or fed in connection with roots, such as flat turnips, mangled wurlzele, &c. In feeding beets and turnips to cows, I have found it a veiy good way to mix them together. As for instance, if I have mangolds or ruta bagas,or swede turnips, I have mixed and fed them together with very satisfactory rcsultc ; at least as far as amount pfmilkis catisulercil. "But I have found that thc butter made from such feed, is not quite equal to that made when feeding carrots, though both arc fed with the same kind of corn fodder, aud with the same amount of caddnges. But when fed in this way, I have never found any taste of turnip in the milk or butter. I have never made any experi mnnts in feeding paisnips, but intend to try them in thc spring. Winter set in a little too soon to allow us to gather any in the fall for that purpose. I raised a fine little patch of I think sixty or seven ty bushels. 1 But as'thcre is nothing, according to my expedience, epual to carrots to feed with corn fodder, to make good butter in thc winter, so 1 think there is nothing equal to good corn fodder to feed gith carrots, for tho same purpose. By good corn fodder, I mean sucn as was cut up before the corn was dead ripe, or had been inju cd by the frost, and saved without damage, retaining its bright green color. Next to this I prefer hay made from a mixture of timothy and clo ver, and Juno, and wire grass, cut green and cured in the cock, as coining as near to fresh pasture grass, as perhaps any thing in tho shape ol dry fodder. But tliia. though better to make cows as well as other stock talo on flesh, I have not found quite as good as corn fodder to make cows give milk or make good but ter. Of course cows to do well in the win ter, must have a good warm stable, and be well budded, and taken care of. The Country Gentleman. HOW TO PKEPAltE HOMINY. I?.
