    Fanner's Department.
V ARMING NOW AND THEN.
When this deponent came lo little
Soncca in 1801, all the good luriiiiiip; Iiero
was confined to growing tha largest fields
of wheat of the but kind iro.n the virgin
soil. I'lio man who then Rolil the most
wheat from his farm was called the best
farmer; he, ofconrso, grew a large patchy
ol rye to Iced with tho 'cut straw to Ins
heavy German plow horses ; but his corn
licld was then small, always neglected,;
and very weedy, so that he rarely liar-

for his family- Farmers who then liar
-vested 000 .or more bushels of wheat,
rarely ever kept more than two or lluce
cows, and poor ones at that only a few
rough sheep to make the wool lor the
linsoy woolscy and fulled cloth of the
family. Hut all that is changed now
thanks to iho-ndvanco of tho wheat midge
for jostling tho farmes onto! the old traek
of depending oh tho wheat crop as tho
only paying product of tho farm I Ucing
thus driven by a mysterious insect from
continuing to grow wheat after wheat, to
a more general and varied system of hus
bandry, grass Jind clover growing, and
stock raiding has enabled tho fanner to
grow largo crops of Indiana corn, oats,
potatoes, etc., with a manure pile contin
ually increasing, and also extra rich in
plant-food ; so that at this time, as the
midgo loaves us, tho wheat crop is again
-very proGtablc including iu tho judicious
.rotation of the farm.
During tho late long continued good
sleighing, in driving along the western
jjhore of the Cayuga, I was delighted to
sec the great improvements that have been
jnadc in the last thirty years. In every
farm yard we passed, instead of a few
-straw-fed cows and pot-bellied yearlings,
and a leaky log shed, as ol old, wo n nv
ce inc ample vara enclosed on two
aides with deep shingle-roofed sheds
which n v sheltered well conditioned
ibovines of improved breed, and lino. Wool
cd sheep, all up to their knees in straw,
but not stiaw fed. Tho extra largo,
painted, and blind-ventilated barn is full
ol well cured fodder and garin ; and the
tall stacks ol dark-looking but early, well
cured clover hay near by, gives an earnest
thnt tho farmer knows how to feed his
soil, as well as his stock.
If the farm Jiouso does not bring to
mind tlie chaste specimen of Grecian or
Cythic architecture, and its surround
ings arc somewhat crude or deficient in
sylvan or floral decoration, you feel as
sureii that tliero is both comfort and
plenty within, and that all its inmates are
ever happily exempt from -.that conflict
between prido and poverty, 'which is so
often the plague of the domestic circle
except in rural life on tho well managed
J arm.
SALT IN THIS MANURE HEAP.
One of the nirst economical articles
about yards and stables is salt. It is jusi
as good to feed to tho manure heap as to
cattle. It is best applied in a weak so
lution in water with a common watering
pot. Whether salt docs or does not
supply direct plant food, it at least pro.
vents the escapo of amm'ona, the most
valuable pait of tho manure heap, j his
gas is always leaving animal manure, un
less tliero is plenty of moisture present,
or some agent to absorb it. Salt docs
this without arresting the decomposition
of the mass. Sea-shore farmers make a
large uso of sea-weed, without fully un
derstanding tho philosophy of its action.
It is carted into the styes- and barnyaitU
several times iu the coiirse of the year,
and intimately mixed by moans of 1 lie
plow with tho droppings of the cattle:
Thus all the best prats of tho manure arc
saved by the salt, and a large addition is
made to its bulk by tho vegetable mat
ter of tho seaweed. These weeds gath
ered from tho shoro arc good manure by
themselves, but are still more valuable
when decomposed and statured with
maiiuro drfppijTgs" lis they pass through,
the stylo and yard on their way to the
plowed field or incdow.
