The Cask or Gun. McNkii.. As yet
the government has made no sign as to
what it will do in the casoof Gen. McNeil.
Tho following from a St. Louis correspon
dent of tho Columbus (0.) Crisis gives a
now aspect to this case :
"Tho man for whom General McNeil
shot ten somo time ago, nnd which was
noticed in the Crisis, has returned homo
alive nnd well, nnd his wife, before the
execution of thoae moo, went to him
(Gcnornl McNeil) and pleaded with
him to wait nnd see if he had been killed
before ho executed thoo men, and the
bruto spurned her. I cati write no more."
Tho return of tho missing man alive
and well really neither adds to nor takes
from the atrocity of tho murder of the ten
men, but it brings the matter home to the
dullest aud most prejudiced comprehensio n
:o:
A Badv rou.Ni) on a BattIjC Finr.D.
Tho following is nn extract of n private
lottrcr from n soldier in tho 11th Illinois,
dated Bolivar Nov. 10th :
Let mo relate to you a touching little
incident that will doubtless slriko ynu ns a
little btrango At tha battle of the ilatohic,
whon the conflict was waging fiercest, upou
advancing, midway between the contend
ing forces, wo found a sweet little blue
eyed baby littlo thing. As I saw it there
hugging the cold earth, its only bed, the
little tear on its cheek,
"That nature bade it weep, turned
Au ice drop sparkling in tho morning
beam,"
unalnrmed 'mid tho awful crnfusi jn of that
fearful battlo, with tho niisnlos of death
lying thick about it nnd crowding close
upon it3 young exigence yet, unhurt, it
seemed, as it lay in its miraculous satety.
to say to mo, "My holp'csuoiS and inno
cence appealed to God, and ho preserved
mo in the midst of this wrecking euniago.
If you will make your plaint to Heaven,
sJod will preserve your poor bleeding
country."
Who would suppose that, in the wild,
fierco battle of tho llatchic, ubrro tho field
was strewn with tho dead, nnd tho shrieks
of the wounded ront the heavens with agony,
a great army would pause in the thickest
of tho conflict to savo unharmed n helpless
child? Yet the bravo 14th, that never
yet has quailed in battlo, did pause, an
ofiicor of the regiment, ordereod "our littlo
baby" carriod to headquarters and tender
ly caied for.
The next day after the battle "ourliabe''
was brought before the 14th, and was
unanimously adopted ''Child of tho Kcgi
mcnt." Tin co or four days later, strange
as it may seem, a poorhenit stricken pov
erty pinched mother came searching the
battlo field in quct of her child Imagine
if you can, the wild exclamations of thanks
giving that burst from that poor woman'f
heart when informed that her child had
been rescued, aud, with n mother's tender
ness. cared for.

them.
Hoats as they grounded, were ennk or
run over. Our inlorniunt, who came
down the creek from the Tair Farm,
counted the wrecks of fifty six boats from

Upon the pier of McOliutoek bridge the
boats were forced tip nearly their full
