d Farmer's Department. I t USB OF SWEET APPLES. A sweet apple, sound and fair, has a a! of sugar or saccharine in its compo- silion. It is, therefore, nutritious ; for sweet apples, raw, will fatton cattle, liorsoa, pigs, sheep and poultry. Cooked sweet apples will ''fatten" children, and make grown people fleshy "fat"' not being a polito word as applied to grown persons. Children being morn of the an i n-11 than grown folks we aro not so fastidious in their classification. lint to the matter in question. In every good firmcr's house who has an orchard, baked sweet apples arc an "institution" in their season. Everybody, from the toddling hnhv linliliiiir un hv its father's knee . . ... . ... I Children arc dCClUly a IIOUSCllOIll C0I11' I modity away back to "our reverend ( grandmother" in her rocking chair, loves , thorn. No swoctmeat smothered in sugar is half so good ; no aroma of dissolved conf-JcLionary i3 half so simple as the soft pulpy flesh of a well baked apple of ilia right kind. It is good in milk, with bread. It is good on your plato with bfakfi3t, dinner or supper wc don't "take ten" atour house. It is good, evory way 'vehemently good" as an enthusi astic friend of ours once said of tomatoes. A'. V. World. PLOWING ORCHARDS. In the spring of 1853, I purchased a village lot on which there was a few fine apple tree?, some of them six or eight inches in diameter. The ground had not liccn very well cultivated for a few years yet tho trees were healthy productive. Wishing lo make them grow rapidly and produco more abundantly, I spaded the ground under them thoroughly and very carefully. They bore well that year. The next spring I again tried spade culture, but I noticed that the earth under the trees were literally bound to gether by fino rootlets, and that a great number of them were broken at every eliovcllul that I turned up. I began to reflect on tho utlity of these fibrous roots. I thought them analogeus to the minute veins, absorbents and capillaries of the human system, every one of which con veyed a certain portion of nutriment to the body, or to somo organ of it ; hence I concluded that the process of constant cultivation must be injurious. My fears were realized. In 1855, two of the best trees died, a great many trees died that year in various parts of the country, and' the cause was attributed to tho weather. I doubt not that a severe winter hastancd tho decay, but in this region, the bc3t cultivated orchards were most severely irjurcd. I can mention many instances in further proof of my position, if necessary, but defer it for the present. New England Farmer. LATE GRAFTING Grafting, it is generally must be dono early in spring, supposed or in will not succeed; the rule is to graft bcfoie vegetation lias begun, Wo have at vorl' ens times practised grafting up to the be ginning of tho second week in Juno, and v;ith pretty uniform success. Tho chief difficulty to contend with is to keep the grafts from drying up on tho one hand, or to prbvcjit them from growing. Where an ice hovtsb'is at hand, the- dffficulty is somewhat undr control. With some however, the usual T cut for budding was made in the bark; tho graft cut sloping at tho end inserted under the bark, and secured by tieing. I All wi re thhly coated with grafting wax.
