Democratio Mass Meoting at
Sorono.
Agreeably to public notice given by
handbills, and through the different Doin
ocratic papers in tho county, there was a
Democratic Mass Meeting iicld at Sercno,
Columbia county, on Saturday., tlio tflh
day of Septcinbcr,ie6'.2, which was largely
attended. Tito people began "to gather
about half-past eleven o'clock A. M. and
'continued to pour in, in largo delegations,
mntil noarly 2 P. M. They come in reg
ular old-fasliiosiod style ; with fourliorsc
teams, hickory trees planted upon the
wagons. Stars and Stripes floating and
Martial Muaic .playing.
Tho Lairdsvillo Brass Band wau pre
sent, and was quite tin acquisition to the
meeting. Ttiy enlivened the occasion
with some nf their best pieced.
Among thn first objects of attraction
was tho appearance of a Military Com
pany, well ftio'tp,pcd, although rather
fiiitastic.lly, and in drill not inferior to
many on the field of battle. They wcra
good looking company ripe for .the wax.
Tb'e company oa arriving at the spot
selected for tho holding of the meeting,
gave three cheftra (that would have done
credit to a whole Brigade) for thcy"constt
tiition and the Union," arid three cheers
for the "Stars and Stripes."
This Was ihc largest meeting we ever
had the pleasure of attending in this part
of the county. We fear wc would not
hr. discharging our whole duly is .Secre
taries! did wc r.nt state the fact .that this
meeting was honored twth the presence
nf a large number of ladies, both old and
young, all of whom Kcemrd to manifest
great intrrcsl in tho terrible state of our
country, and exhibited much anxiety, as
well as tho men, to hear talking on that
point.
The was'mcoiing organized at'2 o'clock,
p. in., by tho selection of tho following
pursousito jet as officers -:
PItKSIDENT,
I II AM IDERK, ESCi.,
VISU FRKSIDKNT,
Jacob Evans, Esq., Lewis Schuyler,

The President on taking hid scat made
a few remarks, thanking tho meeting for
tho honor thoy had confered upon him,
besides br'iuUy dating -the object of the
meeting in a very -ajiiprojtriato and be
coming manner.
On motion, Col. L. L. Tate was invited
to address the mectinir. The Colonel
came forward and spoke to the people at
considerable length, and in such a manner
as to command their whole and earnest
attention. IIa3 remarks were patriotic,
national, and soundly Democratic, and
were received with rounds of applause.
Next, Thomas Chalfant Esq. was ca'llofi
upon the stand, who addressed the audi
ence in an earnest and able speech, nearly
an hour's length. Mr. Chalfant is a na
tional, Constitutional, and Union loving
Democrat, aud hie spnech, if published,
would well attest' this fact. The peo
ple of Greenwood, Pine, and surrounding
townships, .hold .Mr. tChalfant in high es
timation ns a loyal man and true patriot,
notwithstanding the hard names ho is
nailed by some of iiis Abolition onomioa
in his own county as well as in this.
His remarks at this nfeeting will have
good effect, and may ho loDg livo to oft
repeat them.
At tho close of the speeches a patriotic
song was sung by two sonaoflram Berr.
It was wpll sung and received with ap
plause. It would bo no more than propor to
state that Hon. Paul Leidy was advertised
to bo present and speak at this mecting
but failed to reach tho .place on account
of his taking sick while on the road after
having travellod somo considerable dis
tance, othcrwiso he most cortainly vronld
bavo boon prcsont and spoke to the peo
ple, A rote of thanks wan given tho speakers, '
after which the meeting adjoornod in good
order. Signed by the Officers. 1

MiLiTAET UxiroRHS. There Is. perhaps, no depart

more marked improvement than in the clothing of sol

wore leather stocks, which were worthy nCtlie name, for
they kept the wearer in tribulation ; while their padded
