HOGS IN THE APPLE ORCHARD.
Nobody sends eucli apples to market as

apples to soil and gets tho highest prico..
I'olks prefer fair, largo apples; and such
nro always packed in Jacobs' barrels'.
You might fcrnch thorn with a enndlo and
not find a knotty fruit or a worm hole
Such Ithodo Island Greenings or Roxbury
llusscts I havo never met with in the old
States. They are handsomo as any thing
in tho vcrgin soils of tho west.
I was going by Jacobs' orchards last
Eummer, and I had tho curiosity to call
and examine for myself. Says I, "Neigh
Lor, what is thcro in your soil that makes
Euch smooth, largo apples ? They area
third bigger than any thing that I oan get,
and my trees look as well as yours."
'Tho secret is not in tho soil," John
replied, with a twinklo in his eye, ' but on
it. Do you see thoso gruntcrs thcro ? My
pork brings mo fifty cents a pound, eight,
in llcsh, and the balance in fruit. I began
to pasture my orchard ten years ago with
hogs, and sinco that time I havo had no
troublo with wormy fruit. Apples, as a
general thing, don't fall from tho trco un
less something is tho matter will them.
Tho applo worm and curculio lay their
eggs In tho fruit, and tho apples drop early.
Tho pigs devour tho apples, and by Sep
tember every unsound apple is gone, and I
have nothing but fair fruit left. Tho crop
of .insects for tho next year is destroyed by(
tho pigs. They root around under the
trees, keep tho soil loose, manure the land
some, and work over what manure 1 spread
Tho apples help tho pigs and the pigs help
tho apples."
I saw John's secret at once, and havo
profited by it. I never had so few insects
as this Fpring, and I give tho pigs credit
for it. In turning tho orchard into a pas
turo put in pigs not land-pikes with
snouts like levers. You might 1q:o trees
as. well as insects in that caic. Rut well
bred animals, with judicious snouts, which
root in a subdued and christian liko man

LAMPA3 IN HORSES.
This is an imaginary disease, but one
commonly believed in by grooms, and we
arc sorry to add by many well informed
persons. If a young horse refuses to eat,
it is usually imputed to tho ijs, vhich
is said to bo swelling of tho roof mouth
back of the upper front teelh,to such a de
gree that the animal cannot chew itsfood.
Tlia tho awful remedy is presented, of
burning the part with a red-hot iron ! and
in many instances the cruel suggestion is
put in force with inhumane indifference
and haste. This terrible torture is oltcn
inflicted without the slightest reference to
tho condition of the horso in other re
spects what work he has been doing
or what exposure ho has experienced.
No "effort is made to learn whether ho has
taken cold, and is feverish, has eaten or
drank heartly immediately after a lively
drive, or whether there are symptions of
colic, or some injury has taken place to
the mouth or jaws. No. Itistlienwipas,
and the red-hot iron must bo applied
nothing else will do.
Truly, tho lot of the horse is a hard
one, and if we can do anything to allevi
ate it, to arouse men to a more merciful
consideration of the noble animal, wo
shall certainly feel happier every time we
bco one. N. E. Farmer.
LINIMENT FOR SWELLING ON AN
IMALS.
A. "Willard, Jr., in the 'Country Gentle
man,', says : I notice that an animal of
E. M. Goflin, of Iowa, had a hard cal
lous swelling, which ho says came mid
way between tho eye and and nostril. 1
purchased a three year old colt two years
ago, which had a swelling, on the same
pjaco as described above, which was an
objection among tho horso buyers who
prized hor 825 less, and feared to buy at
all. I ventured to purchase, and apply
what I thought might scatter it. Tho
owner said it camo on about a month bo
fore I bought her, but did not know the
cause of it I applied the following lini
ment; and in less than three months the
swelling disappeared wholly. I consider
it the best liniment, extant for swellings
on man or beast. Apply once a day and
rub it brisky: half an ounce spirits of
hartshorno; one gill spirits of turpentine;
half pint sweet oil ; ono pint alcohol; two
ounces gum. camphor. (Dissolve the
camphor in tho alcohol.)
KP What a poor world this would bo
without women and newspapers I How
would the news got about !
2? Tho reason why two buttons are
put on behind a coat is that t hoy wcro an
cient'y used to support the sword bolt, and
tho tailors havo stuck to tho practice cucr
unco.
