Parker, ofSurroy,Eng Jand, lately instituted a vory curious ox Borlmeut in tho manftn-ouiont of whaat, of which wo givo tho following-abstract. In July, ho desposited one kernel of wheat in a common garden pot, in August, ho divided it into four plants, and in thrco weeks ho again subdivided these into twelve, and so on until Novembr, when tho wholo number from this ono kernel araouutcd to fifty-two, whon thoy woro all set in tho open soil. In July following, twelve wero found to be dead, tho remainder in full health. On tho 10th of August, the crops was harvested, and tho product was 1072 stems averaging fifty grains to tho stem being an incrcsao of 03.000 grains! How wonderful hardy and prolifio is this plant, to indispcneablo to tho comfort and support of man! Woro it all lost, by somo terrible revoluion, and but a sin gle grain loft, under suoh a process as wc havo just related, how soon could all the fields of tho world bo smiling again with this golden, invaluable crop? PaESEnviNd Fiiuit. For several years past wo havo been trying to abolish the old inodo of preserving fruits, viz : the addi tion of pound for pound of sugar, and stewing them down to an indigestible mass in order to mako them "keep." Our ef forts in this direction havo been in a meas ure successful ; tho high price of sugar this year will do much towards tho adoption of tho newer and better modo. All kinds of fruits can bo prosorvod for a year, or more, with the uso of littlo or no sugar, and at tho aamo timo retain nearly all of their natural flavor. The process is not more difficult, and is less costly than tho btcwiug process, whilo the fruit is far more delicious and healthful. Tho whole operation do- pendsupon Bimply heating tho fruit through and then keeping it entirely free from the access of air. Easy Method op Killinq Inbects. For alt moths, and beetles that fly at night, uso firo to trap them. A lira of shavings, or anything that will mako a blazo, kindled in the evening, will destroy thousands. Tho more flame tho better, if it does not scotch tho leaves. A cheaper method still, is to take tho half of an old sugar hogshead, or any open vcsbcI, with a broad Eurfacc, partially filled with water, and set a lighted glass lantern on a block or etonc, in the center of the water at night. Tho moths aro attracted by tho lantern and its reflections, and fall into the water, Tho advantage of th sugar hogshoad is, that it serves for a trap by day as well as by night. For moths that fly by day, wc take wide-mouth glass bottles half fill them with swoetoned water and vinegar, and hang them in tho tress, changing tho liquid weekly. Thousand of insect are drowned Relative Value ov Food for Miclh Cows. Tho Scottish Farmer observes i "Sovoral French and German chcmist3cs' timato tho relalivo valuo of several doscrip tions of food for iniloh cows as follows : That 100 pounds cf hay aro worth 200 lbs. of potatoes ; 200 pounds of boot root, with tho leaves ; 350 pounds of Siberian oal bago 5 250 pounds of b'ect, without tho leaves ; 250 pounds of carrots ; 80 pounds of hay, clover, Spanish trefoil, or vetches; CO pounds of oilcake or colza ; 550 pounds of pea straw and vetches ; 300 pounds of barley and oat stray ; 400 pounds of rye and wheat straw ; 25 pounds of peas, bcans or vetch seed ; 50 pounds of oats ; or 500 lbs. of green trefoil, Spanish trefoil or vetches.
