JS?" We wonder if any two men waded
through tho trash of I'rof. Lowell, being
a letter from "ISTcgrofredum Jawin to
Miss Kosce Biglip," written in rhymo, and
in tho stylo of cnglisb used by an ignorant,
conceited, impertinent, and meddlesome
yankeo : recorded in tho laot Atlantic.
The professor had better lay down tho
pen, and go to hunting up old clothrs for
the "contrabands" at Fortress Monroe.
BSrBy amajorty of forty thousand the
people of Pennsylvania have placed the
seal of condemnation upon tho radical wing
on the Republican party. Tho cliango in
favor of Democracy in other Northern
Mates has been scarcely less remarkable,
and it is but fair to suppose that, had the
doctrine of omacipation been as generally
promulgated beforo tho elections as since,
the popular repudiation thereof would have
been overwhelming.

intimated! that these accounts havo been
much exaggerated.
The N. V. Herald of Sunday, in com
menting upon tho late fire at Charleston,
Bays :
It is worthy of remark that Institute
Hall, whore tho Democratic Convention
was held, which split the party, and split
the nation ; the theatre, to which tho Se
cessionists retired to hold a separate con
vention ; St. Andrew s Hall, whore tho
Jlozart faction figured; the Charleston
Hotel, and tho Mills House, whore tho
warrinc factions respectively held their
hcadquartors; Hiberninan Hall, where
tho secession ordinance was passed ; the
cannon and ammunition foundries, tho
treason shons of tho AJurcun and Courier
and the headquarters of Governor Pick
ens, have been all laid in ashes. Does it
not look like a retribution of Providence,
and an omen and a typo of tho future de
struction of tho rebellion ?

Tho Legislature of this Stato will as

Tlio Senate is largely opposition to De

Patriotism Above Party. The
peoplo of Judge Woodward's Judicial
District, in consequoncs of his resignation,
havo almost unanimously petitioned Gov.
Curtin to appoint William Elwell, Esq.,
of Towanda, to fill his placo tho bar es

however, refused, and said ho would ap
point no democrat, notwithstanding the
District is Democratic, and notwithstand

Democrat says : "Wc consider this a pret

Among tho ablo public speakers on the
